Author: Dermot Hodson
Narrator: Elliot Fitzpatrick

A compelling new history of the European Union and the people who sought to shape and challenge it-from Maastricht to today. The European Union is the most ambitious, and one of the most contentious, international organizations ever created. Decisions made in Brussels shape the lives of over 500 million Europeans, and its laws and policies resonate around the world. But how has the European Union endured over three turbulent decades marred by crises at home and abroad? In this major account, Dermot Hodson traces the development of the European Union from its establishment in 1993 through to Brexit, COVID-19, and the invasion of Ukraine. Hodson shows how the union has been held together not by faceless technocrats but national leaders who stood together in times of turmoil despite a fierce backlash from a new generation of right-wing populists. Circle of Stars offers a rich appraisal of Europe’s troubled past and turbulent present-focusing on the people who built the European Union as we know it today.

Twenty-First Century Leadership for EU Institutions

Free Download Derek Pelland Ronald de Bruin, Sebastian Prieto Tovar, "Twenty-First Century Leadership for EU Institutions"
English | ISBN: 1443895245 | 2017 | 140 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book explores the type of leadership needed to transform EU Institutions to allow them to truly serve Europes people. Our world today calls for leaders who are connected to themselves, know how to unleash the potential of others and build organisations that serve peoples needs, and are stewards of society. The path towards transformation is not just about learning another trick or method, it is an inward journey each of us must undertake. We search to first recognise our best self and then give ourselves to lead our lives in service of a bigger purpose. The prioritising of serving others leads to a conscious choice of one aspiring to lead. In turn, others will experience this inspiration at all levels, learning to lead as servants. This timeless concept is what Robert Greenleaf referred to when he coined the term servant-leadership in 1970. This book not only gives insights into the servant-leadership philosophy, but also offers real-life interviews with twelve EU civil servants, including Herman van Rompuy, former President of the European Council. Their stories illustrate that servant-leadership is manifesting inside EU institutions already, independent of background and function level. Servant-leadership offers a unique opportunity to empower EU professionals in facing the challenges of the 21st century and helping the EU to serve its citizens better.

Democracy Without Politics in EU Citizen Participation From European Demoi to Decolonial Multitude

Free Download Democracy Without Politics in EU Citizen Participation: From European Demoi to Decolonial Multitude by Alvaro Oleart
English | PDF (True) | 2023 | 285 Pages | ISBN : 3031385829 | 4.2 MB
How does the dominant understanding(s) of the demo(i)cratic subject in the EU, and of democracy more broadly, shape the EU’s democratic innovations on ‘citizen participation’? What are the politically and normatively preferable alternatives, both in terms of the conceptualisation of the democratic subject in the EU and in the ensuing political practices? The book addresses these questions combining a political theory with a political sociology perspective, contrasting the ‘democracy without politics’ approach of the EU in the context of the Conference on the Future of Europe with that of ongoing transnational activist processes. In doing so, it develops an agonistic alternative to ‘the people(s)’ as the political imaginary of democracy in the EU, which is based on the idea of the ‘decolonial multitude’. Thus, the book puts forward a diagnosis of current debates on EU democratic legitimacy as well as proposing an alternative.
