Maximus the Confessor and Evolutionary Biology The Phylogenetic Logoi

Free Download Andrew P. Jackson, "Maximus the Confessor and Evolutionary Biology: The Phylogenetic Logoi "
English | ISBN: 1032763299 | 2024 | 216 pages | EPUB | 1119 KB
This book brings Maximus the Confessor’s logoi doctrine into dialogue with modern-day evolutionary biology. It explores the extent to which the logoi, as described by Maximus, exhibit features that are concordant with evolution before going on to consider more discordant aspects that cannot be ignored. The author addresses the curious resonance between the logoi and evolution in a systematic way through a close reading of primary textual material allied with a deep understanding of both the classical Darwinian and ‘extended’ evolutionary syntheses. The study joins with other Maximian interpreters in attesting to the incarnational and theophanic nature of the logoi, but seeks to extend this distinctively Eastern Christo-cosmology into the problematic territory of biological evolution, a territory historically dominated by Western scholarship. The book will be of interest to scholars of religion and science, as well as Patristics and the Eastern Orthodox theological traditions.

Homo sapiens is a maker of unnatural history. For countless millennia, evolution has shaped our behaviour. But over just a few millennia, that behaviour has reshaped the world: building sprawling cities, global faiths, states, and empires. Nature made humanity, and humanity remade nature. Here, one of the world’s leading anthropologists reveals how our evolutionary past informed the birth and rise of global civilisation. Unveiling a visionary new way of studying human history – one that stunningly weaves together experimental psychology, anthropology and quantitative social science – Harvey Whitehouse uncovers the three evolutionary biases that shape our social behaviour: conformism, religiosity and tribalism. And he reveals how these biases were harnessed and extended to produce the greatest revolutions in human history, from the transition to agriculture to the rise of the first bureaucracies and organised religions. Above all, he argues that only by understanding our natural biases can we hope to survive the challenges of our unnatural present – from violent criminality to environmental meltdown. The result is a landmark study of the past and future of the world we made. It transforms our understanding of who we are and who we can be.

Evolutionary Intelligence How Technology Will Make Us Smarter [Audiobook]

Free Download W. Russell Neuman, Tom Parks (Narrator), "Evolutionary Intelligence: How Technology Will Make Us Smarter"
English | ASIN: B0D9HRSSL9 | 2024 | MP3@64 kbps | ~07:41:00 | 193 MB
It is natural for us to fear artificial intelligence. But does Siri really want to kill us? Perhaps we are falling into the trap of projecting human traits onto the machines we might build. In Evolutionary Intelligence, Neuman offers a surprisingly positive vision in which computational intelligence compensates for the well-recognized limits of human judgment, improves decision making, and actually increases our agency. Neuman takes the listener on an exciting, fast-paced ride, all the while making a convincing case about a revolution in computationally augmented human intelligence.
Neuman argues that, just as the wheel made us mobile and machines made us stronger, the migration of artificial intelligence from room-sized computers to laptops to our watches, smart glasses, and even smart contact lenses will transform day-to-day human decision making. If intelligence is the capacity to match means with ends, then augmented intelligence can offer the ability to adapt to changing environments as we face the ultimate challenge of long-term survival. Tapping into a global interest in technology’s potential impacts on society, economics, and culture, Evolutionary Intelligence demonstrates that our future depends on our ability to computationally compensate for the limitations of a human cognitive system that has only recently graduated from hunting and gathering.

This book presents the Evolutionary Case Formulation model, a new proposal of case formulation protocol developed with the aim of providing psychotherapists with a common language to identify and treat psychological problems of varying complexity. This new case formulation model was developed based on the analysis of textual data in complete psychotherapeutic processes which led to the identification of different dimensions of intersubjective meaning elaboration that are a product of our evolution as a species.
