Free Download Ellen L. Kohler, "The Gordion Excavations, 1950-1973: Final Reports Volume II; The Lesser Phrygian Tumuli Part 2 The Cremations "
English | ISBN: 1949057151 | 2023 | 792 pages | PDF | 145 MB
This volume contains the excavation report for 12 cremation burials from the Phrygian site of Gordion in central Anatolia. These tombs, dating from the later seventh century to the third quarter of the 6th century BCE, were excavated by The University Museum between 1950 and 1969, and by the German brothers Alfred and Gustav Körte in 1900. The processes for interment through construction of tumulus and cremation procedure are carefully detailed, followed by an analysis of associated finds. Two tumuli of the Hellenistic period, both covering stone chambers with inhumation burials within, are included in an appendix. Further appendices discuss other specific materials excavated from the cremation burials. A discussion of the contemporary inhumation and cremation tumulus burials at Gordion in the Phrygian period, highlighting their continuities and significant differences, forms part of the conclusion, as does discussion of sociocultural developments at Gordion between ca. 650-525 BCE as illuminated by the mortuary remains. The tumuli afford insights into questions related to gender, religion, adult/child identity, trade, social status, ethnicity, transcultural affiliations, ceramic developments, jewelry manufacture, high-status artifact display (including ivory), feasting behaviors, animal sacrifice, hero cult, and widespread "killing" of artifacts associated with the cremation burials.

English | 2002 | pages: 326 | ISBN: 1850746850 | PDF | 49,6 mb
A companion volume to The Baths Basilica, Wroxeter (1997) and The Roman Baths and macellum at Wroxeter (2000), this volume focuses on military activities at the site. Excavations revealed evidence for the foundations and construction of earth and timber defences and an area comprising mess halls, barrack bocks and store rooms, built c.AD 60. Wroxeter was the base for Legio XIV and then later Legio XX before being finally abandoned in c.AD90. This report looks in detail at the history of the fortress and outlines the finds from the excavations: metal, bone, stone, pottery, lamps, tiles, glass and faunal remains.

The Baths Basilica, Wroxeter Excavations 1966-90

Free Download The Baths Basilica, Wroxeter: Excavations 1966-90 By Philip Barker, Roger White, Kate Pretty, Heather Bird, Mike Corbishley
1997 | 602 Pages | ISBN: 1850745285 | PDF | 92 MB
With contributions by Miranda Armour-Chelu, Richard Brickstock, John Casey, Mike Charles, Sue Colledge, Rowena Gale, Mark Hassall, Robert Ixer, Alison Locker, Mick Monk, Sidney Renow, Robin P Symonds, Roberta Tomber, Felicity Wild, and Leonard Wilkinson.Ebook (PDF) published 2013.The excavations at Viroconium cornoviorum (Wroxeter), Shropshire, on the site of the baths basilica, built c 150 AD have provided seminal information of considerable importance for the study of the late and post-Roman periods in Britain. This is presented here in detail, with lavish illustrations including a large number of conjectural reconstructions of buildings and site panoramas, and 177 loose leaf plans. The final chapter considers the difficulty of dating late and sub-Roman sites, and locates the site within the broader framework of Roman and sub-Roman Britain. Considerable quantities of artefacts and environmental material were recovered, but only information related to the interpretation of the structures is presented here. The life of the baths basilica continued to the end of the fifth century. The site and neighbouring town blocks were then redeveloped with the construction of up to seventy timber buildings set on rubble and posthole foundations. Analysis of these buildings show that they were laid out using Roman modules. Chief among them, and occupying the centre of the site, was a massive winged house, apparently indicating the conversion of a former public space into a private demesne. Subsequently parts of the area seem to have again changed status with part of the east-west street taken over and occupied by market booths. Abandonment is indicated by a radiocarbon date of between 600 and 790 AD obtained from a single burial cut into the latest structures.
