In 1990, BLOOD IN THE FACE: The Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, Nazi Skinheads, andthe Rise of a New White Culture was the first book to uncover the contours, beliefs, leaders, and wider influence of the American racist far-right movement. It told their story from the insideout, complete with interviews, recruiting pamphlets, cartoons, rants, sermons, threats, policereports, and more. The accompanying analysis by veteran investigative reporter James Ridgeway detailed the movement ‘s volatile history and its expansion beginning in the 1980s, insisting that the groups making up this "fringe" culture were too powerful-and too much a part of Americanculture-to be ignored or dismissed.

Challenges Women Face in Retirement Security

Free Download Jean B. Larou, "Challenges Women Face in Retirement Security "
English | ISBN: 1607417472 | 2009 | 139 pages | PDF | 5 MB
This book focuses on women and retirement. Women aged 65 and over will account for a growing segment of the U.S. population over the next several decades. Despite increases in women’s workforce behaviour in the past 65 years, elderly women have persistently high rates of poverty. Thus, it is important to understand the differences between men’s and women’s retirement income, and how women may fare given future reforms to Social Security and pensions. Preparing for retirement and achieving financial security are daunting tasks for all Americans to be sure; however, women face many unique challenges. Women still perform the primary caretaker role in our society. As a result, many women spend significant periods of time out of the workforce raising children or taking care of elderly parents, significantly diluting their earning power. Women are also more likely to work part-time or work in industries where employers are less likely to offer retirement benefits. And women generally earn less than men. In 2004, women earned 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. All of these factors have a significant impact on what women receive from Social Security and pension, as well as what they are able to accumulate through personal savings. This income gap is further exacerbated by the fact that women generally live longer than men, and therefore, need to stretch their income over a longer period of time. This book consists of public domain documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

The Changing Face of the Heartland Preparing America’s Diverse Workforce for Tomorrow

English | 2015 | ASIN: B0BL8HJDCR | EPUB | pages: 28 | 0.3 mb
As baby boomers retire over the coming decades, one of the big questions facing the American economy is whether the younger, more diverse generation will be prepared to fill the demands of the workforce. In the next Brookings Essay, Jennifer Bradley, founding director of the new Aspen Institute Center on Urban Innovation and a former Brookings fellow, examines the efforts of several organizations in the traditionally "lily-white" Twin Cities of Minnesota to close the persistent education and employment gaps facing its rapidly growing population of people of color. By the year 2044, people of color will account for a majority of the U.S. population, but now is the time for the public and private sectors to close the racial gaps in education and employment. As Europe and countries like Japan face declines in their working-age populations, the population growth among people of color has the potential to give the U.S. a competitive advantage in the 21st century. THE BROOKINGS ESSAY: In the spirit of its commitment to high-quality, independent research, the Brookings Institution has commissioned works on major topics of public policy by distinguished authors, including Brookings scholars. The Brookings Essay is a multi-platform product aimed to engage readers in open dialogue and debate. The views expressed, however, are solely those of the author. Available in ebook only.

Boreal Forests in the Face of Climate Change Sustainable Management

Free Download Boreal Forests in the Face of Climate Change: Sustainable Management by Miguel Montoro Girona, Hubert Morin, Sylvie Gauthier, Yves Bergeron
English | EPUB (True) | 2023 | 859 Pages | ISBN : 303115987X | 113.9 MB
This book explores a new conceptual framework for the sustainable management of the boreal forest in the face of climate change. The boreal forest is the second-largest terrestrial biome on Earth and covers a 14 million km2 belt, representing about 25% of the Earth’s forest area. Two-thirds of this forest biome is managed and supplies 37% of global wood production. These forests also provide a range of natural resources and ecosystem services essential to humanity. However, climate change is altering species distributions, natural disturbance regimes, and forest ecosystem structure and functioning. Although sustainable management is the main goal across the boreal biome, a novel framework is required to adapt forest strategies and practices to climate change.
