The Causes and Costs of Depository Institution Failures

Free Download The Causes and Costs of Depository Institution Failures By Allin F. Cottrell, Michael S. Lawlor (auth.), Allin F. Cottrell, Michael S. Lawlor, John H. Wood (eds.)
1995 | 250 Pages | ISBN: 940104290X | PDF | 7 MB
One of the major financial market events of the 1980s was the precipitous rise of depository institution failures including banks, savings and loan associations, and credit unions. Not since the 1930s has there been a similar period of turmoil in these industries. The events of the 1980s have inspired a renewed interest in the causes and cost of financial institution failure and several questions that had seldom been asked in the post-World War II economics literature have resurfaced Why do financial institutions fail? What are the costs of their failure? How do they differ from other firms and industries? What are the implications for financial market regulation? The Causes and Costs of Depository Institution Failures critically surveys and extends previous analyses of these questions. Audience: Scholars and researchers in the areas of money and banking, financial institutions, and financial markets, as well as regulators and policymakers.

The World Health Organization Achievements and Failures

Free Download Yves Beigbeder, "The World Health Organization: Achievements and Failures"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0367667495, 1472480856 | EPUB | pages: 200 | 0.7 mb
The World Health Organization (WHO) is undergoing a crisis of credibility and challenge. Having been subjected to a severe financial crisis and criticisms of its management of pandemics such as the H1N1 flu case and the outbreak of Ebola, with a new Director-General at its helm, it is an ideal time to review the WHO’s past and current achievements including on-going operations and reported failures. Whilst time is given to recurrent attacks on WHO performance, it is balanced by also highlighting the WHO’s leadership, its member states, and its influence on other actors, NGOs and business. As such, this study reviews the WHO’s actions in the most visible programmes such as SARS, H1N1, Ebola and also smallpox, malaria, onchocerciasis, polio and AIDS. The author also discusses the desirable balance between operational and normative functions and proposals for reform of the Organization.

Market or Government Failures An Asian Perspective

Free Download A. Bhalla, "Market or Government Failures?: An Asian Perspective"
English | 2001 | pages: 249 | ISBN: 0333662407 | PDF | 1,3 mb
Choosing between government and market is not a very helpful exercise since both are necessary. This book argues that it is misplaced to dichotomise between government and market failures. Too much attention is generally placed on government failures and not enough on private corporate failures. Failures occur in both public and private corporate spheres. They may be due to lapses in implementation of policies and programmes. Lack of enforcement in developing countries occurs either because rules and norms do not exist or they are poorly enforced. Emphasis on implementation problems highlights the importance of organizations and institutions.

The Audit Failures of the Wirecard Scandal Examining the Role of the Auditor in Regulatory Oversight

Free Download The Audit Failures of the Wirecard Scandal: Examining the Role of the Auditor in Regulatory Oversight by Edgar Löw , Reinhard Heyd
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 185 Pages | ISBN : 3031598539 | 8.8 MB
Wirecard was the largest economic scandal in the history of Germany. Following the collapse of Wirecard, numerous lawsuits, both criminal and civil by equity and debt investors, were filed not only against Wirecard but also against the auditor Ernst & Young. This book demonstrates that a proper audit in accordance with the auditing standards would have uncovered the fraud much earlier, and details what went wrong. The book first deals with the fundamentals of auditing and examines the Wirecard business models from a legal and economic perspective. Then, the book deals with the fiduciary structure, which there has been often debated. When the fraud was uncovered, it became clear that 1.9 billion Euros that were supposed to be in escrow accounts were not. The book discusses the balance sheet mapping in detail, including the related audit requirements and examines in which balance sheet item the amounts (allegedly) in escrow accounts should have been reported, before examining and weighing the corresponding income statement items. In each chapter, not only are the accounting requirements presented, but the requirements for audit measures based on the respective Standards on Auditing are highlighted and explained in detail. The book places the requirements for reporting in the context of the Wirecard case, and will be of interest to accountants, auditors, market regulators, and credit risk analysts alongside students of accounting/auditing.
