The Illumined Heart Capture the Vibrant Faith of Ancient Christians

Free Download The Illumined Heart: Capture the Vibrant Faith of Ancient Christians By Frederica Mathewes-Green
2017 | 111 Pages | ISBN: 1557255539 | EPUB | 1 MB
Why are modern Christians so indistinguishable from everyone else? How come Christians who lived in times of bloody persecution were so heroic, while we who live in safety are not?How could the first Christians fast valiantly, but we feel deprived without dessert? How did New Testament believers pray without ceasing? How could the early Christian martyrs actually forgive their torturers? What did the Christians of the first centuries know that we don’t?That’s what this book is about. From the author:When I look back at the process of writing The Illumined Heart, I’m amazed all over again at how God directed it. I wrote the whole thing in a week, the week before Christmas, in fact, which is so typically congested with last-minute errands, unpredicatable weather, aches and sniffles. For Orthodox Christians, it’s also a week that we fast from meat and dairy, adding another ball to the juggling act. Yet somehow I started writing the book on Monday morning and completed it Sunday night, just fourteen minutes after the Christmas Eve service began. (I kept wondering where in the week I’d dawdled and lost that fourteen minutes.)It’s no wonder that I look at The Illumined Heart as the one out of all of my books that felt the most God-directed. Mostly, he told me when to shut up. For a cup-runneth-over writer like me, starting a book is like moving into mid-pregnancy and putting on those stretch-front trousers for the first time; they’re like a license to eat. And knowing that I have room to write on and on, whatever comes to mind, makes for abundant, wandering prose. Yet The Illumined Heart is quiet, proportional, just-enough; it’s like a jewel. It’s no wonder that this is a personal favorite among my own books, and the one I must urge people to read. I’m pleased by the amount of good work it’s done so far, and hope that it will continue to do much more.

English | December 31, 2021 | ISBN: 0824887883 | 294 pages | PDF | 24 Mb
Even a fleeting glimpse of Mount Fuji’s snow-capped peak emerging from the clouds in the distance evokes the reverence it has commanded in Japan from ancient times. Long considered sacred, during the medieval era the mountain evolved from a venue for solitary ascetics into a well-regulated pilgrimage site. With the onset of the Tokugawa period, the nature of devotion to Mount Fuji underwent a dramatic change. Working people from nearby Edo (now Tokyo) began climbing the mountain in increasing numbers and worshipping its deity on their own terms, leading to a widespread network of devotional associations known as Fujikō.

An Uncommon Faith A Pragmatic Approach to the Study of African American Religion

Free Download An Uncommon Faith: A Pragmatic Approach to the Study of African American Religion (George H. Shriver Lecture Series in Religion in American History) by Eddie S. Glaude Jr.
English | November 15, 2018 | ISBN: 0820354899, 0820354171 | True EPUB | 90 pages | 1.4 MB
With An Uncommon Faith Eddie S. Glaude Jr. makes explicit his pragmatic approach to the study of African American religion. He insists that scholars take seriously what he calls black religious attitudes, that is, enduring and deep-seated dispositions tied to a transformative ideal that compel individuals to be otherwise―no matter the risk. This claim emerges as Glaude puts forward a rather idiosyncratic view of what the phrase "African American religion" offers within the context of a critically pragmatic approach to writing African American religious history.

From "national treasure" Francis Collins (Philip Yancey), theNew York Timesbestselling author ofThe Language of Godand former director of the National Institutes of Health, comes a deeply thoughtful guidebook to get us beyond societal divisions and back to the sources of wisdom-"the sort that can save us before it is too late" (Jane Goodall). As the COVID-19 pandemic revealed, we have become not just a hyper-partisan society but also a deeply cynical one, distrustful of traditional sources of knowledge and wisdom. Skepticism about vaccines led to the needless deaths of at least 230,000 Americans. "Do your own research" is now a rallying cry in many online rabbit holes. Yet experts can make mistakes, and institutions can lose their moral compass. So how can we navigate through all this?
