Farewell to the Party Model Independent Local Lists in East and West European Countries

Free Download Farewell to the Party Model?: Independent Local Lists in East and West European Countries By Marion Reiser Dr., Everhard Holtmann Dr. (auth.), Marion Reiser, Everhard Holtmann (eds.)
2008 | 290 Pages | ISBN: 353115687X | PDF | 2 MB
Local independent lists are a general phenomenon on the local level in many European countries – in established Western countries as well as in new democracies in Middle and Eastern Europe. The research is linked to the much-discussed phenomenon of the growing disenchantment with political parties and the sceptical evaluation of political parties on the local level. Typically, these lists understand themselves as non-parties or anti-parties and therefore assume a contra position in the local party system. The edited book aims first at developing a theoretical and conceptual framework for these non-partisan lists. Second, the contributions describe and analyse for the first time comparatively presence, success, organisational structure, behaviour and performance of these local actors in twelve West and East European countries.

A Farewell To Entropy

Free Download A Farewell To Entropy By Arieh Ben-Naim
2008 | 412 Pages | ISBN: 9812707077 | PDF | 4 MB
The principal message of this book is that thermodynamics and statistical mechanics will benefit from replacing the unfortunate, misleading and mysterious term "entropy" with a more familiar, meaningful and appropriate term such as information, missing information or uncertainty. This replacement would facilitate the interpretation of the "driving force" of many processes in terms of informational changes and dispel the mystery that has always enshrouded entropy. It has been 140 years since Clausius coined the term "entropy"; almost 50 years since Shannon developed the mathematical theory of "information" — subsequently renamed "entropy". In this book, the author advocates replacing "entropy" by "information", a term that has become widely used in many branches of science. The author also takes a new and bold approach to thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Information is used not only as a tool for predicting distributions but as the fundamental cornerstone concept of thermodynamics, held until now by the term "entropy". The topics covered include the fundamentals of probability and information theory; the general concept of information as well as the particular concept of information as applied in thermodynamics; the re-derivation of the Sackur-Tetrode equation for the entropy of an ideal gas from purely informational arguments; the fundamental formalism of statistical mechanics; and many examples of simple processes the "driving force" for which is analyzed in terms of information. Readership: Anyone interested in the sciences, students, researchers; as well as the layman.

A Farewell to Wars The Growing Restraints on the Interstate Use of Force

Free Download A Farewell to Wars: The Growing Restraints on the Interstate Use of Force
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009392557 | 328 Pages | PDF | 2 MB
Since World War II, there has been a trend towards fewer wars, the Russian invasion of the Ukraine standing as a major ‘aberration’. With decades of experience as an international lawyer, diplomat and head of UN Iraq inspections, Hans Blix examines conflicts and other developments after World War II. He finds that new restraints on uses of force have emerged from fears about nuclear war, economic interdependence and UN Charter rules. With less interest in the conquest of land, states increasingly use economic or cyber means to battle their adversaries. Such a turn is not free from perils but should perhaps be welcomed as an alternative to previous methods of war. By analysing these new restraints, Blix rejects the fatalistic assumption that there will always be war. He submits that today leading powers are saying farewell to previous patterns of war, instead choosing to continue their competition for power and influence on the battlefields of economy and information.
