Laser Processing Surface Treatment and Film Deposition

Free Download Laser Processing: Surface Treatment and Film Deposition By W. M. Steen (auth.), J. Mazumder, O. Conde, R. Villar, W. Steen (eds.)
1996 | 944 Pages | ISBN: 9401065721 | PDF | 34 MB
Synthesis of nonequilibrium metallic phases has been an area of great interest to the materials processing community since early 1960. Inherent rapid cooling rates in laser processing are being used to engineer non-equilibrium microstructures which cannot be rivaled by other processes. This lecture will discuss the phenomena involved and its application in designing materials with tailored properties. What is non-equilibrium Synthesis? This is a synthesis method to produce binary or higher order materials where kinetics of the pro cess affects the transport of the constituent elements during phase transformation resulting in a composition or crystallographic configuration which is different from what is observed when the elements arranges themselves with the lowest possible Gibbs Free energy, which is the equilibrium condition. Figure 1 illustrates the phenomena. Phase diagram under equilibrium condition is illustrated by the solid line whereas the no-equilibrium phase diagram is represented by the dotted line. One can observe the shrinkage of the phase field under non-equilibrium condition. Any alloy composition between the solidus lines of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase diagram will be a non equilibrium alloys with extended solid solution.

Endlessly fascinating, dark and bright, The Red Shoes (1948) employs every branch of the cinematic arts to sweep the audience off its feet, invigorated by the transcendence of art itself, only to leave them with troubling questions. Representing the climax of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s celebrated run of six exceptional feature films, the film remains a beloved, if unsettling and often divisive, classic.

Beyond the Essay Film Subjectivity, Textuality and Technology

Free Download Julia Vassilieva, "Beyond the Essay Film: Subjectivity, Textuality and Technology "
English | ISBN: 9463728708 | 2020 | 246 pages | PDF | 3 MB
In the wake of the explosion in the production of essay films over the last 25 years and its subsequent theorization in scholarly literature, this volume seeks to historicize these intertwined developments within the ‘long durée’ of the 20th century and into the 21st. By raising the issue of ‘beyond the essay film’, this collection seeks not only to acknowledge the influential predecessors of this ― in the view of many critics, the most interesting type of contemporary filmmaking ― but also to speculate about its possible transformation as we move forward into the uncharted waters of the 21st ― digital ― century. Beyond the Essay Film focusses on three specific axes that underpin and shape the articulation of the essay film as a specific cultural form ― subjectivity, textuality, and technology ― to explore how changes along and across these dimensions affect historical shifts within the essay-film practice and its relation to other types of cinema and neighbouring art forms.

Images of Occupation in Dutch Film Memory, Myth, and the Cultural Legacy of War

Free Download Wendy Burke, "Images of Occupation in Dutch Film: Memory, Myth, and the Cultural Legacy of War "
English | ISBN: 9089648542 | 2017 | 262 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II left a lasting mark on Dutch memory and culture. This book is the first to explore depictions of that period in films made a generation later, between 1962 and 1986. As Dutch public opinion towards the war altered over the postwar decades, the historical trajectory of Dutch recovery and reconstruction-political, economic, and, most complicated of all, psychological-came to be revealed, often unconsciously, in the films of the period.

Hungarian Film, 1929-1947 National Identity, Anti-Semitism and Popular Cinema

English | ISBN: 9462980764 | 2017 | 330 pages | PDF | 3 MB
What does it mean for someone or something to be Hungarian? People in Hungary grappled with this far-reaching question in the wake of the losses and transformation brought by World War I. Because the period also saw the rise of cinema, audiences, filmmakers, critics, and officials often looked at films with an eye to that question, too. Did the Hungary seen on screen represent the Hungary they knew from everyday life? And-crucially-did the major role played by Jewish Hungarians in the film industry make the sector and its creations somehow Jewish rather than Hungarian? Jews, it was soon decided, could not really be Hungarian, and acts of Parliament soon barred them from taking major roles in cinema production. This book tells the troubled story of that period in Hungarian cinematic history, taking it up through World War II.

Hands on Film Actants, Aesthetics, Affects

Free Download Barry Monahan, "Hands on Film: Actants, Aesthetics, Affects "
English | ISBN: 946372771X | 2022 | 270 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Hands on Film is a comprehensive study of the representations and on-screen uses of the human limb, spanning the history of the cinema from its birth to contemporary times. It examines how filmmakers have framed the hand for a variety of effects, from stylistic to thematic, and for the development of characterisation and narrative. The book offers insights into how films have created meaning by focusing on that part of the anatomy and, in turn, proposes a variety of ways in which its on-screen appearances might shed light on what it means to be sentient, cultured, and creative beings in the world.

Cinematic Vitalism Film Theory and the Question of Life

Free Download Inga Pollmann, "Cinematic Vitalism: Film Theory and the Question of Life "
English | ISBN: 9462983658 | 2018 | 296 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book argues that there are constitutive links between early twentieth-century German and French film theory and practice, on the one hand, and vitalist conceptions of life in biology and philosophy, on the other. By considering classical film-theoretical texts and their filmic objects in the light of vitalist ideas percolating in scientific and philosophical texts of the time, Cinematic Vitalism reveals the formation of a modernist, experimental and cinematic strand of vitalism in and around the movie theater. The book focuses on the key concepts including rhythm, environment, mood, and development to show how the cinematic vitalism articulated by film theorists and filmmakers maps out connections among human beings, milieus, and technologies that continue to structure our understanding of film.
