From bestselling historian Saul David, a riveting new history of the British airborne experience across the Second World War. The legendary ‘Red Devils’ were among the finest combat troops of the Second World War. Created at Churchill’s instigation in June 1940, they began as a single parachute battalion of 500 men and grew into three 10,000-strong airborne divisions: the 1st, 6th and 44th Indian, each composed of parachutists and glider-borne troops. Wearing their distinctive maroon berets, steel helmets and Dennison smocks, they served with distinction in every major theatre of the conflict – including North Africa, Sicily, mainland Europe and the Far East – and played a starring role in some most iconic airborne operations in history: the Bruneval Raid of February 1942; the capture of the Primasole, Pegasus and Arnhem Bridges in July 1943, June 1944 and September 1944 respectively; and Operation Varsity, the biggest parachute drop in history, near Wesel in Germany in March 1945.

The Cosmopolitan Military Armed Forces and Human Security in the 21st Century

Free Download The Cosmopolitan Military: Armed Forces and Human Security in the 21st Century By Jonathan Gilmore
2015 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 113703226X | PDF | 1 MB
What role should national militaries play in an increasingly globalised and interdependent world? The Cosmopolitan Military examines the often difficult transition they have made toward missions aimed at protecting civilians and promoting human security. It poses the question of whether we might be seeing the emergence of armed forces that exist to serve the wider human community, rather than the nation state, and examines the role played by overseas ethical commitments in shaping recent Western defence and security policy. Although national militaries have the traditional responsibility of defending the state and its citizens, operations to protect vulnerable non-citizens have now become an important additional role in the post-Cold War world. This path-breaking study provides an incisive analysis of peacekeeping, the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), military operations during the War on Terror, and the rise of human security thinking. Drawing upon cosmopolitan ethical approaches, it formulates a new mode of military practice, one that might help militaries to escape the constraints of warfighting and better embrace responsibilities to a wider community of humankind.

In 1941, as World War Two raged, scores of men stepped forward to answer Winston Churchill’s call for volunteers for Special Service, a high-risk opportunity to undertake the most hazardous, top-secret duties of war. Comprised of some of the finest fighting units in the entire British Army, these warriors longed to leave behind their mind-numbing garrison duties for battle. A rightfully proud regiment with an unrivaled esprit de corps, they were disavowed as unruly by top brass, unyieldingly vaunted by Churchill, and courageously loyal to the clandestine "butcher and bolt" raids that made their sacrifices-and their triumphs-legendary. But even as the combat-worn ranks of the SAS risked all to deliver the first resounding defeats on Nazi Germany, there were well-founded fears that their fortunes would change.
In Brothers in Arms, Damien Lewis pays tribute to the mavericks and visionaries who founded elite-forces soldiering-the SAS. Exhaustively researched from an invaluable trove of never-before-seen documents, wartime letters, diaries, mission reports, rare photos, undeveloped film, plus interviews with WWII veterans and their surviving families, Damien follows one close-knit band of men from the founding of the SAS through to the Italian landings, which truly turned the tide of the war.

Base Defense at the Special Forces Forward Operational Base

Free Download Curtis W Hubbard, "Base Defense at the Special Forces Forward Operational Base"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1249405068 | EPUB | pages: 138 | 0.5 mb
Special Forces forward operational bases (FOB) are essential for mission and contingency planning as well as for the preparation, infiltration and exfiltration of Operational Detachment Alphas (ODA). Therefore, the defense of this command and control headquarters is critical for preserving combat power and synchronizing military actions in a theater of operations. Because the enemy has the capability of projecting forces with the objective of disrupting US military operations, FOBs have become likely targets. According to SF doctrine, FOBs should be located in secure areas with MP or host-nation personnel providing the bulk of the security force. Although this situation is preferable, it is by no means assured. FOBs should be able to provide their own security in the event other forces are not available or when rapid deployment restricts the flow of conventional forces into a theater of operations. After-action review results from the Joint Readiness Training Center demonstrate that many SF battalions are not prepared to execute base defense tasks without the assistance of other forces. Many SF commanders do not consider base defense a mission essential task and the result is a lack of training by many of their personnel. This study analyzes joint and SF doctrine, observations from the field, and the effects of the contemporary operating environment to identify weaknesses in the readiness of SF battalions. This project attempts to answer three major questions that are the basis for the research. 1) With the emergence of an asymmetrical threat in the contemporary operating environment, does current doctrine adequately and realistically address base defense measures at the FOB? 2) Can SF commanders assume that attachments from other units will be available to defend FOBs? 3) Has the nature of the threat changed significantly enough to alter current thinking?
