Matthieu Ricard trained as a molecular biologist, working in the lab of a Nobel prize-winning scientist, but when he read some Buddhist philosophy, he became drawn to Buddhism. Eventually he left his life in science to study with Tibetan teachers, and he is now a Buddhist monk and translator for the Dalai Lama, living in the Shechen monastery near Kathmandu in Nepal. Trinh Thuan was born into a Buddhist family in Vietnam but became intrigued by the explosion of discoveries in astronomy during the 1960s. He made his way to the prestigious California Institute of Technology to study with some of the biggest names in the field and is now an acclaimed astrophysicist and specialist on how the galaxies formed.

Artificial Intelligence for Science (AI4S) Frontiers and Perspectives Based on Parallel Intelligence

Free Download Artificial Intelligence for Science (AI4S): Frontiers and Perspectives Based on Parallel Intelligence by Qinghai Miao , Fei-Yue Wang
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 118 Pages | ISBN : 3031674189 | 19.4 MB
This book presents a comprehensive framework for analyzing, evaluating, and guiding AI for Sciences (AI4Sci) research, offering a unified approach that facilitates analysis across various academic fields through a shared set of dimensions and indicators. It provides a systematic overview of recent AI4Sci advances in various disciplines and offers insights into the latest issues in and prospects of AI4Sci. The book is based on the theory of Parallel Intelligence (PI), which forms the foundation for the general AI4Sci framework. By analyzing multiple cases in various academic fields, this framework integrates key elements of AI4Sci, such as real scientific problems, datasets, virtual systems, AI methods, human roles, and organizational mechanisms, from a multidimensional perspective. It also assesses and summarizes the limitations of AI4Sci, incorporating the latest advances in AI for fundamental models. Lastly, it explores the impact of DeSci and DAO, as well as TAO, on AI4Sci ecosystem development and prospects. Through its balanced approach, the book offers readers a goal-oriented perspective, focusing on a concise presentation of the core ideas and reducing detailed descriptions of specific AI4Sci cases to a minimum.

For centuries, reports of man-eating tigers in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore have circulated, shrouded in myth and anecdote. This fascinating book documents the "big cat"-human relationship in this area during its 350-year colonial period, re-creating a world in which people feared tigers but often came into contact with them, because these fierce predators prefer habitats created by human interference.

Archaeology Across Frontiers and Borderlands

Free Download Stefanos Gimatzidis, Sila Mangalaglu-Votruba, Magda Pieniazek, "Archaeology Across Frontiers and Borderlands: Fragmentation and Connectivity in the North Aegean and the Central Balkans from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 3700180292 | PDF | pages: 455 | 151.7 mb
The objective of this volume is a theoretical debate on the archaeology at the crossroads of the Balkans, the Aegean and Anatolia and its interrelation with social and political life in this historically turbulent region. Modern political borders still divide European archaeology and intercept research. This is particularly evident in southeastern Europe, where archaeological interaction among neighbouring countries such as Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, the FYR of Macedonia and Albania is practically inactive. Reception of the past within the local perspectives of modern nation states and changing identities are some of our focal points: Can breaks or continuities in the material culture be perceived as evidence for ethnic (dis-)continuities, migrations, ethnogeneses, etc. and what is the socio-political background of such approaches? What is the potential of material culture towards the definition of modern and past identities? Interaction among different societies and cultures as well as the exchange of goods and ideas are another topic of this book. The area encompassing the north Aegean and the Balkans was, during the later prehistoric and early historic periods, the showplace of fascinating cultural entanglements. Domestic, cultic and public architecture, artefact groups and burial rites have always been employed in the archaeological process of defining identities. However, these identities were not static but rather underwent constant transformations. The question addressed is: How did people and objects interact and how did objects and ideas change their function and meaning in time and space? Colleagues representing different scholarly traditions and cultural backgrounds, working in Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia, took part in this debate, and a total of 19 papers are now presented in this book.

The Emerging Semantic Web (Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications, 75)

Free Download I. F. Cruz, "The Emerging Semantic Web (Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications, 75)"
English | 2002 | pages: 308 | ISBN: 1586032550 | PDF | 22,9 mb
The World Wide Web has been the main source of an important shift in the way people get information and order services. However, the current Web is aimed at people only. The Semantic Web is a Web defined and linked in a way that it can be used by machines not just for display purposes, but also for automation, integration and reuse of data across various applications. Facilities and technologies to put machine understandable data on the Web are rapidly becoming a high priority for many communities. In order for computers to provide more help to people, the Semantic Web augments the current Web with formalized knowledge and data that can be processed by computers. It thus needs a language for expressing knowledge. This knowledge is used to describe the content of information sources, through ontologies, and the condition of operation of Web services. One of the challenges of the current Semantic Web development is the design of a framework that allows these resources to interoperate. This book presents the state of the art in the development of the principles and technologies that will allow for the Semantic Web to become a reality. It contains revised versions of a selection of papers presented at the International Semantic Web Working Symposium that address the issues of languages, ontology’s, services, and interoperability.

Quest for the Living God Mapping Frontiers in the Theology of God

Free Download Elizabeth A. Johnson, "Quest for the Living God: Mapping Frontiers in the Theology of God"
English | ASIN : B00LGS90UQ | 2011 | pages | AZW3 | 448 KB
‘Since the middle of the twentieth century,’ writes Elizabeth Johnson, ‘there has been a renaissance of new insights into God in the Christian tradition. On different continents, under pressure from historical events and social conditions, people of faith have glimpsed the living God in fresh ways. It is not that a wholly different God is discovered from the One believed in by previous generations. Christian faith does not believe in a new God but, finding itself in new situations, seeks the presence of God there. Aspects long-forgotten are brought into new relationships with current events, and the depths of divine compassion are appreciated in ways not previously imagined.’
