‘Standard’ employment relationships, with permanent contracts, regular hours, and decent pay, are under assault. Precarious work and unemployment are increasingly common, and concern is also growing about the expansion of informal work and the rise of ‘modern slavery’. However, precarity and violence are in fact longstanding features of work for most of the world’s population. Lamenting the ‘loss’ of secure, stable jobs often reflects a strikingly Eurocentric and historically myopic perspective.

Tests of Global Governance Canadian Diplomacy and United Nations World Conferences

Free Download Andrew F. Cooper, "Tests of Global Governance: Canadian Diplomacy and United Nations World Conferences"
English | 2004 | pages: 311 | ISBN: 9280810960 | PDF | 1,5 mb
This book provides a detailed examination of what happens when traditional diplomatic methods interface with new forms of global governance. The role of Canada is given special attention as both a unique and representative sample of how the interplay between diplomacy and global governance has played out over the past decade or so during UN World Conferences. The main focus is on the span of activity from the 1992 Rio UNCED conference, through the 1993 Vienna Conference on Human Rights, the 1994 Cairo Conference on Population and Development, the 1995 World Summit for Social Development, the 1995 Beijing Conference on Women, to the 2001 Durban World Conference on Racism. The picture that emerges, while not translating into a complete recipe for a shift toward democratic governance, suggests a deepening network of institutions, actors, and organizations forming the complex regimes that govern the major arenas of world politics. At a country-specific level, the analysis supports the view that a deep residue of multilateralism still exists in Canada but argues that this tradition faces ongoing challenges from a variety of sources.

Global Trade and the Transformation of Consumer Cultures The Material World Remade, c.1500-1820

Free Download Beverly Lemire, "Global Trade and the Transformation of Consumer Cultures: The Material World Remade, c.1500-1820 "
English | ISBN: 0521141052 | 2018 | 370 pages | PDF | 51 MB
The oceanic explorations of the 1490s led to countless material innovations worldwide and caused profound ruptures. Beverly Lemire explores the rise of key commodities across the globe, and charts how cosmopolitan consumption emerged as the most distinctive feature of material life after 1500 as people and things became ever more entangled. She shows how wider populations gained access to more new goods than ever before and, through industrious labour and smuggling, acquired goods that heightened comfort, redefined leisure and widened access to fashion. Consumption systems shaped by race and occupation also emerged. Lemire reveals how material cosmopolitanism flourished not simply in great port cities like Lima, Istanbul or Canton, but increasingly in rural settlements and coastal enclaves. The book uncovers the social, economic and cultural forces shaping consumer behaviour, as well as the ways in which consumer goods shaped and defined empires and communities.
