Thanks to advances in international communication and travel, it has never been easier to connect with the rest of the world. As philosophers debate the consequences of globalization, cosmopolitanism promises to create a stronger global community. Cosmopolitanism in the Age of Globalization examines this philosophy from numerous perspectives to offer a comprehensive evaluation of its theory and practice. Bringing together the works of political scientists, philosophers, historians, and economists, the work applies an interdisciplinary approach to the study of cosmopolitanism that illuminates its long and varied history. This diverse framework provides a thoughtful analysis of the claims of cosmopolitanism and introduces many overlooked theorists and ideas. This volume is a timely addition to sociopolitical theory, exploring the philosophical consequences of cosmopolitanism in today’s global interactions.

Modernity, Modernization, and Globalization Issues and Challenges of the 21st Century

Free Download Ph.D. Shahidullah, Shahid M., "Modernity, Modernization, and Globalization: Issues and Challenges of the 21st Century"
English | ISBN: 1536163236 | 2019 | 312 pages | PDF | 7 MB
This book has examined some of the pressing issues and challenges related to modernity, modernization, and globalization of the 21st century. The book has used historical and comparative perspectives and many extant sources of primary data. The authors have addressed many macro-issues such as modernity and church-state separation, America’s historical role in spreading global modernity, the global expansion of democracy, the rise of a global middle class, the advent of global digital connectivity, and the recent rise of right-wing political parties in the global political landscape. The authors also examined many micro-issues such as modernization and women empowerment in India and Nigeria, the growth of a unique political culture of Islam and modernism in Sierra Leone, the problem of transition to emancipative values in the post-socialist countries of Central and Easter Europe, rise in religious hostilities in South Asia, need for modernization in dealing with minority females in America’s criminal justice system, and modernity and the evolution of the rights of the disabled in America. The empirical and country studies largely support the theme of the book that modernity is a cultural and civilizational model. The global modernity has been progressing across world societies for more than two hundred years. It has been particularly remarkably advancing since the second half of the twentieth century. The world capitalist economy has become more global, world democracy has expanded, the global middle class has vastly grown, women’s economic and political empowerments have widened, and global digital connectivity has increased. These social and economic transformations are far more fundamental for the future progress of democracy and global modernity.

Living with Globalization

Free Download Paul Hopper, "Living with Globalization"
English | 2006 | pages: 200 | ISBN: 1845201922, 1845201930 | PDF | 1,1 mb
The term ‘globalization’ generally refers to the homogenization of cultures across the world due to Western encroachment. However, as this book explains, the process is far more subtle, complex and uneven. Taking as its starting point the fundamental question of whether globalization exists, Living with Globalization provides a lively discussion of one of the most used and abused concepts in the twenty-first century. If globalization is a valid construct, it manifests itself in lived experience, not in abstract theories. Examining the ways in which globalization is contributing to patterns of conflict, Living with Globalization explores a variety of case studies, ranging from 9/11 to identity formation. The book reveals the complex ramifications of globalization on society, government and everyday lives.

The Politics of Change Globalization, Ideology and Critique

English | 2001 | pages: 221 | ISBN: 0312235593, 134941414X, 0333760883 | PDF | 0,7 mb
Kant defined the Enlightenment as humanity’s attempt to leave behind its self-imposed immaturity. Social theory is thus charged with enlightening the human condition and its social constitution in order to achieve maturity and human dignity. Enlightenment is a thoroughly subversive business. The authors to this volume are in no way disturbed by the claim that everybody contributes to society according to their ability and that everybody receives according to their needs. What is disturbing, though, is that the demand for such a ‘change’ appears outdated and that, instead, many commentators espouse the idea that society’s ‘laws of development’ are governed by an invisible hand. The Politics of Change takes issues with such views. It does so through a timely assessment of the debate on globalization and contemporary versions of neo-liberal and neo-functionalist thought, which underpin much of the globalization discourse. The Politics of Change emphasizes ‘change’ as a project of human emancipation.
