Through extensive research, the author has compiled the biographies of three former female concentration camp guards and one former political inmate. These are examples of how such cases were treated differently in East and West after the end of the Nazi regime. With the help of numerous historical documents, he traces the lives of these women and the atrocities they committed. The different approaches to the prosecution of these perpetrators in the two states of Germany, and the omissions that are highlighted, are thought-provoking. Some of them escaped punishment and were able to lead carefree lives without remorse until the end of their days.

On Sunday 18 June 1944 the congregation assembled for morning service in the Guards Chapel in Wellington Barracks, St Jamess Park, central London. The service started at 11 am. Lord Hay had read the first lesson, and the Te Deum was about to begin, when the noise of a V1 was heard. The engine cut out. There was a brief silence, an intensive blue flash and an explosion and the roof collapsed, burying the congregation in ten feet of rubble. This was the most deadly V1 attack of the Second World War, and Jan Gores painstakingly researched, graphic and moving account of the bombing and the aftermath tells the whole story. In vivid detail she describes the rescue effort which went on, day and night, for two days, and she records the names, circumstances and lives of each of the victims, and explains why they happened to be there. Her minutely detailed reconstruction of this tragic episode in the V1 campaign against London commemorates the dead and wounded, and it gives us today an absorbing insight into the wartime experience of all those whose lives were affected by it.

This book is the most thorough study yet of the whole process of recruitment, indoctrination and performance of those responsible for the guarding of concentration camp inmates. It is not an attractive subject – the conversion of human beings into murderers and individuals routinely carrying out appalling acts of cruelty are bound to be shocking. But it happened under the Third Reich on a massive scale.

Il-2 Shturmovik Guards Units of World War 2

Free Download Oleg Rastrenin, A Yurgenson, "Il-2 Shturmovik Guards Units of World War 2"
English | 2008 | pages: 100 | ISBN: 1846032962 | PDF | 34,5 mb
Over 43,000 Il-2/10s were built between 1941 and 1955, more than any other combat aircraft in history, making this one of the most important Soviet aircraft deployed in World War II (1939-1945). Built originally as a two-seater, the Il-2 had lost the rear gunner’s position by the time the aircraft started to reach frontline units. Armed with ground-attack rockets, the aircraft proved deadly against Wehrmacht panzers as pairs of Il-2s roamed the frontline at low level. However, the Shturmoviks (armored attackers) were vulnerable to attack from the rear by enemy fighters, so Ilyushin reverted to the two-seat layout in September 1942. Oleg Rastrenin provides a fascinating account of the complex development history of a plane that was crucial to Russia’s defense. From Stalingrad to Kursk to Berlin, this book charts the airplane’s vital contribution to the most famous battles of the Eastern front.
