Silver-Halide Recording Materials gives a detailed analysis of the theory, the characteristics, the manufacturing, and the processing methods of silver-halide materials used for the recording of holograms. Emphasis is placed on the selection of suitable silver-halide materials for conventional as well as special holographic applications. A detailed account of current developing and bleaching methods used in the production of silver-halide holograms is given. The author also supplies a large number of recipes for different types of processing baths. The text is complemented by a comprehensive list of references which will facilitate further study. The monograph will be suitable for courses in holography, where the student possesses some background knowledge about the general holographic process and the holographic technique.

When Faraday performed the very first experiments on electromagnetic effects, which form the very foundation of modern civilization since virtually everything electrical utilizes them, he was asked of what use his experiments were. He is said to have replied: "What is the use of a baby?" That reply might also be given to those who asked what was the use of basic research which resulted in the development of the laser and holography. Brigadier General Leo A.Kiley, Commander, Office of Aerospace Research, USAF, in his remarks before the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers at the opening ceremony of the Seminar on Holography held at San Francisco, California, in May 1968, declared, "It has been said that in the twenty-first century at least half of the jobs that will exist then do not exist today. But be that as it may, I am sure that holography will be common place. " And later "Even in its embryonic state today, the concept of holography is providing real world applications to the scientific community and I feel that continued rapid growth can be predicted." Now, only three years after these statements, the development of holography is extraordinary on the scientific side and very promising from the point of view of proven and potential applica tions. Holography looks like an emerging technique, a valuable tool for engineers.

This book discusses the direct imaging of electric and magnetic fields of various functional materials using electron holography, providing indispensable information for understanding their electromagnetic properties. In order to clearly demonstrate the principles of this cutting-edge technology, easy-to-understand explanations are accompanied by numerous illustrations and figures throughout the book. The book highlights the dynamic nature of electromagnetic fields in novel materials, as revealed by changing temperature, or applying electric current and magnetic fields. Furthermore, it showcases, as a new development of the technique, the direct observation of accumulation and collective motion of electrons around charged insulators. Clear experimental data on electromagnetic fields and the motions of electrons help the reader understand their importance in materials science and fundamental physics. Seeing is believing!
