The University, a 13th century medieval educational construct initially developed in France, Italy, and England, but later exported to virtually every part of the globe, has from its inception possessed an integrated international character. The University is still widely regarded as an inherently "international" institution, drawing together both faculty and students from all parts of the world to gather at a single location to carry on the university’s mission of learning and research. This book examines the impact of web-based e-learning on university internationalisation.

The Impact of Science on Society (Routledge Classics)

Free Download The Impact of Science on Society (Routledge Classics) By Bertrand Russell
2016 | 120 Pages | ISBN: 1138641154 | EPUB | 1 MB
Many of the revolutionary effects of science and technology are obvious enough. Bertrand Russell saw in the 1950s that there are also many negative aspects of scientific innovation. Insightful and controversial in equal measure, Russell argues that science offers the world greater well-being than it has ever known, on the condition that prosperity is dispersed; power is diffused by means of a single, world government; birth rates do not become too high; and war is abolished. Russell acknowledges that is a tall order, but remains essentially optimistic. He imagines mankind in a ‘race between human skill as to means and human folly as to ends’, but believes human society will ultimately choose the path of reason. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Preface by Tim Sluckin.

Insecure Masculinity On the Impact of Societal Ideals of Masculinity on Men’s Mental Health in Jamaica (BestMasters)

Free Download Insecure Masculinity: On the Impact of Societal Ideals of Masculinity on Men’s Mental Health in Jamaica (BestMasters) By Julia Faulhaber
2022 | 68 Pages | ISBN: 3658395893 | PDF | 1 MB
This work focuses on the relationship between childhood socialization, masculinities, and young men’s coming of age in contemporary Jamaica. The author elucidates social, cultural, and historical dimensions of young men’s lifeworlds and theorizes on the potential trajectories of being emotionally well and/or un-well vis-à-vis gendered normative orders of growing up and relating to others within and beyond kinship and courtship relations. Based on fieldwork, this book elaborates on the extent to which social discourses of masculinity and men’s personal experiences of their own and other men’s mental health are reproduced in Jamaica. Faulhaber places her work in contemporary psychological and medical anthropology and aims to overcome the separation of psyche, body, and environment that is often common in psychotherapy, psychiatry, and health sciences. The author embarks on this important endeavour through critical and self-reflexive ethnography and the analysis of hegemonic narratives and discourses in media and popular culture. In juxtaposition and extension to other global mental health initiatives, this work highlights that well-being, affliction and suffering can barely be grasped scientifically as objectively measurable mental states of the individual.

Private Equity and Its Impact

Free Download Spencer J. Fritz, "Private Equity and Its Impact "
English | ISBN: 1606926829 | 2009 | 171 pages | PDF | 11 MB
This book looks at the increase in leveraged buyouts (LBO) of U.S. companies by private equity funds prior to the slowdown in mid-2007 which has raised questions about the potential impact of these deals. Some praise LBOs for creating new governance structures for companies and providing longer term investment opportunities for investors. Others criticise LBOs for causing job losses and burdening companies with too much debt. This book addresses the effect of recent private equity LBOs on acquired companies and employment, the impact of LBOs jointly undertaken by two or more private equity funds on competition, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) oversight of private equity funds and their advisers, and regulatory oversight of commercial and investment banks that have financed recent LBOs. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reviewed academic research, analysed recent LBO data, conducted case studies, reviewed regulators’ policy documents and examinations, and interviewed regulatory and industry officials, and academics. The GAO recommends that the federal financial regulators give increased attention to ensuring that their oversight of leveraged lending at their regulated institutions takes into consideration systemic risk implications raised by changes in the broader financial markets.
