Free Download Monika Arnez, "Gender, Islam and Sexuality in Contemporary Indonesia "
English | ISBN: 9819956587 | 2024 | 236 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This Open Access book explores the complex interplay between gender, Islam and sexuality in Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population. The authors offer a fresh look at the tensions between the local and the global through a wide range of cultural expressions and productions, including fashion, Islamic dating, popular literature, and videos on YouTube. The book is grouped around three core themes: sexuality and violence, halal lifestyle, and shame and self-determination. The first section unpacks how activists and progressive religious scholars have argued for the need for the Sexual Violence Bill and it examines the ambivalence between criminalisation and care towards LGBTQ+ people. In the second, the authors bring new insights into how local expressions of Islam, gender and sexuality are negotiated in an increasingly globalised world. The contributions on the third theme tackle gender roles and mobility in culturally diverse regions such as Hong Kong,Taiwan, Singapore, the US, and Indonesia.

Bridges of Friendship Reflections on Indonesia’s Early Independence and Australia’s Volunteer Graduate Scheme

Free Download Ann McCarthy, "Bridges of Friendship: Reflections on Indonesia’s Early Independence and Australia’s Volunteer Graduate Scheme "
English | ISBN: 1925495221 | 2017 | 256 pages | PDF | 11 MB
This volume casts new light on the intercultural and personal ties among Indonesians and Australians in the context of the post-war rise of secular volunteering, and the unique political and social conditions then prevailing in the newly formed Indonesian Republic. It brings together previously unpublished manuscripts by Betty Feith, who has a lifelong involvement in church and humanitarian service, and by Kurnianingrat Ali Sastroamijoyo, an educator and someone who took an active part in the Indonesian Revolution. The first two parts include substantive works of historical narrative and memoir. The third part is a collection of letters that provides a bird’s-eye view of the ethos and workings of the Volunteer Graduate Scheme, an initiative under which Australian graduates were employed in the Indonesian civil service. Betty’s nuanced and insightful narrative reflects her intimate involvement in the inception and running of the Volunteer Graduate Scheme, while Kurnianingrat’s reminiscences, ‘Other Worlds in the Past’, offer insights into Indonesian social and cultural history at a critical time for the nation at the same time as they chronicle Kurnianingrat’s own experiences and perspective. Kurnianingrat’s memoirs include a fascinating and moving account of daily life in occupied Yogyakarta during the struggle for independence against the Dutch. In the 1950s, Indonesians Kurnianingrat and Harumani Rudolph-Sudirdjo formed lasting friendships with Australian volunteer graduates, Betty Feith and Ailsa Thomson Zainuddin. The mutual interests, connections and commitments among this circle of friends are illustrated in the final section of Bridges of Friendship. A History of Photography in Indonesia From the Colonial Era to the Digital Age

Free Download Brian C. Arnold, "A History of Photography in Indonesia: From the Colonial Era to the Digital Age"
English | ISBN: 9463729496 | 2022 | 496 pages | PDF | 22 MB
As a former colonized nation, Indonesia has a unique place in the history of photography. A History of Photography in Indonesia: From the Colonial Era to the Digital Age looks at the development of photography from the beginning and traces its uses in Indonesia from its invention to the present day. The Dutch colonial government first brought the medium to the East Indies in the 1840s and immediately recognized its potential in serving the colonial apparatus. As the country grew and changed, so too did the medium. Photography was not only an essential tool of colonialism, but it also became part of the movement for independence, a voice for reformasi, an agent for advocating democracy, and is now available to anyone with a phone. This book gathers essays by leading artists, scholars, and curators from around the world who have worked with photography in Indonesia and have traced the evolution of the medium from its inception to the present day, addressing the impact of photography on colonialism, independence, and democratization.

Gender, Violence and Power in Indonesia Across Time and Space

Free Download Gender, Violence and Power in Indonesia: Across Time and Space By Katharine McGregor, Ana Dragojlovic, Hannah Loney
2020 | 210 Pages | ISBN: n/a , ASIN: 2019055737 | PDF | 13 MB
This book uses an interdisciplinary approach to chart how various forms of violence – domestic, military, legal and political – are not separate instances of violence, but rather embedded in structural inequalities brought about by colonialism, occupation and state violence. The book explores both case studies of individuals and of groups to examine experiences of violence within the context of gender and structures of power in modern Indonesian history and Indonesia-related diasporas. It argues that gendered violence is particularly important to consider in this region because of its complex history of armed conflict and authoritarian rule, the diversity of people that have been affected by violence, as well as the complexity of the religious and cultural communities involved. The book focuses in particular on textual narratives of violence, visualisations of violence, commemorations of violence and the politics of care.

Free Download Lidya Christin Sinaga, "Six Decades of Indonesia-China Relations: An Indonesian Perspective"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 9811080836, 9811340595 | PDF | pages: 102 | 1.2 mb
This book analyses the relations between Indonesia and China in the regional dynamics of Southeast Asia. The rising China has influenced global and regional constellations, and also has direct impacts for Indonesia. While this fact should be viewed as an opportunity that needs to be fully utilised for the benefit of national development of Indonesia, we should also prepare for the threats embedded in this development, especially from the service and labour sectors. As such, this book suggests that equal positions in relations between Indonesia and China are absolutely necessary, since both countries need each other in their efforts to maintain the continuity of their development. It also argues that to further strengthen its position in relation to China in the future, Indonesia’s diplomacy requires an integrated grand design that supports the creation of economic and political power in the face of the emergence of China’s economic and military power.

Resource Nationalism in Indonesia Booms, Big Business, and the State

Free Download Eve Warburton, "Resource Nationalism in Indonesia: Booms, Big Business, and the State"
English | ISBN: 1501771965 | 2023 | 252 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In Resource Nationalism in Indonesia, Eve Warburton traces nationalist policy trajectories in Indonesia back to the preferences of big local business interests. Commodity booms often prompt more nationalist policy styles in resource-rich countries. Usually, this nationalist push weakens once a boom is over. But in Indonesia, a major global exporter of coal, palm oil, nickel, and other minerals, the intensity of nationalist policy interventions increased after the early twenty-first-century commodity boom came to an end. Equally puzzling, the state applied nationalist policies unevenly across the land and resource sectors.
