Metadata play a fundamental role in both DLs and SDIs. Commonly defined as "structured data about data" or "data which describe attributes of a resource" or, more simply, "information about data", it is an essential requirement for locating and evaluating available data. Therefore, this book focuses on the study of different metadata aspects, which contribute to a more efficient use of DLs and SDIs. The three main issues addressed are: the management of nested collections of resources, the interoperability between metadata schemas, and the integration of information retrieval techniques to the discovery services of geographic data catalogs (contributing in this way to avoid metadata content heterogeneity).

Geo-information for Disaster Management

Free Download Geo-information for Disaster Management By Alessandro Annoni, Lars Bernard, John Douglas, Joseph Greenwood, Irene Laiz (auth.), Professor Dr. Peter van Oosterom, Dr. Siyka Zlatanova, Elfriede M. Fendel (eds.)
2005 | 1433 Pages | ISBN: 3540249885 | PDF | 55 MB
Geo-information technology offers an opportunity to support disaster management: industrial accidents, road collisions, complex emergencies, earthquakes, fires, floods and similar catastrophes (for example the recent huge disaster with the Tsunami in South-East Asia on 26 December 2004). Access to needed information, facilitation of the interoperability of emergency services, and provision of high-quality care to the public are a number of the key requirements.Such requirements pose significant challenges for data management, discovery, translation, integration, visualization and communication based on the semantics of the heterogeneous (geo-) information sources with differences in many aspects: scale/resolution, dimension (2D or 3D), classification and attribute schemes, temporal aspects (up-to-date-ness, history, predictions of the future), spatial reference system used, etc.The book provides a broad overview of the (geo-information) technology, software, systems needed, used and to be developed for disaster management. The book provokes a wide discussion on systems and requirements for use of geo-information under time and stress constraints and unfamiliar situations, environments and circumstances.

ItwasourpleasuretoholdtheInternationalWorkshoponSecurity2006(IWSEC 2006) this year in Kyoto and to publish the proceedings as a volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. The workshop was our ?rst trial in that two major academic society groups on security in Japan, viz. ISEC and CSEC, jointly organized it; ISEC is a te- nical group on information security of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), and CSEC is a special interest group on computer security of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ). It was Ryoichi Sasaki, the former head of CSEC, who proposed holding such an international workshop in Japan for the ?rst time, two years ago. The two groups supported his idea and started organizing the workshop. CSEC has its annual domestic symposium, the Computer Security Symposium (CSS), in – tober for three days, and we decided to organize the workshop prior to CSS this year. The initial aim of the workshop was primarily to provide young researchers with the opportunity to present their work in English. However, due to more submissions than we had anticipated, the quality of the accepted papers became far better than we had expected. Theconferencereceived147submissions,outofwhichtheprogramcommittee selected 30 for presentation. These proceedings contain the ?nal versions of the accepted papers, which the authors ?nalized on the basis of comments from the reviewers. Since these revisions were not subject to editorial review, the authors bear full responsibility for the contents of their papers.

Visual Information Systems on the Move Following the success of previous International Conferences of VISual Information Systems held in Melbourne, San Diego, Amsterdam, Lyon, Taiwan, Miami, and San Francisco, the 8th International Conference on VISual Information Systems held in Amsterdam dealt with a variety of aspects, from visual systems of multimedia information, to systems of visual information such as image databases. Handling of visual information is boosted by the rapid increase of hardware and Internet capabilities. Now, advances in sensors have turned all kinds of information into digital form. Technology for visual information systems is more urgently needed than ever before. What is needed are new computational methods to index, compress, retrieve and discover pictorial information, new algorithms for the archival of and access to very large amounts of digital images and videos, and new systems with friendly visual interfaces. Visual information processing, features extraction and aggregation at semantic level and content-based retrieval, and the study of user intention in query processing will continue to be areas of great interest. As digital content becomes widespread, issues of delivery and consumption of multimedia content were also topics of this workshop. Be on the move… June 2005 Stéphane Bres Robert Laurini
