This edited collection draws from cultural studies and Feminist Science and Technology Studies to offer a timely and exciting intervention into the growing field of women’s digital health. It explores the intersection of gender and embodied computing, with particular attention to access barriers and the forms of biometric surveillance that operate in wearables, ingestibles, and embeddables marketed to women (the industry generally known as "FemTech"). While the most utilized and profitable FemTech products include ovulation and fitness trackers, reproductive technologies, contraceptive microchips, and "smart" pills, this only represents a fraction of health concerns affecting women.

The Future of Inclusive Education Intersectional Perspectives

Free Download The Future of Inclusive Education: Intersectional Perspectives
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031492412 | 215 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
This book addresses the tensions of existing theories and practices of inclusive education from an international perspective. Adopting Disability Critical Race Theory in Education (DisCrit) and Critical Disability Studies (CDS), the authors expose how race neutral knowledge characterizes inclusive education and exhorts readers to consider how intersectional perspectives provide more complex and nuanced understandings about ways in which racism and ableism simultaneously circulate as intersecting oppressions in schools and societies and across geographical borders. The authors begin by engaging in a critical analysis of the genesis of inclusive education before exploring how existing policies and practices of inclusive education in the global North evade the collusive nature of oppressions faced by minoritized students with disabilities and are uncritically transferred into the global South. Ultimately, the book encourages readers to reconceptualize inclusive education and move towards developing and sustaining transformative notions of global justice.

Intersectional Advocacy

Free Download Intersectional Advocacy: Redrawing Policy Boundaries Around Gender, Race, and Class
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009433091 | 335 Pages | PDF | 4.4 MB
What happens to those living at the margins of US politics and policy – trapped between multiple struggles: gender-based violence, poverty, homelessness, unaffordable healthcare, mass incarceration and immigration? In this book, Margaret Perez Brower offers the concept of ‘intersectional advocacy’ to reveal how select organizations addressing gender-based violence are closing policy gaps that perpetuate inequalities by gender, race, ethnicity, and class. Intersectional advocacy is a roadmap for rethinking public policy. The book captures how advocacy groups strategically contest, reimagine, and reconfigure policy institutions using comprehensive new strategies that connect issues together. As these groups challenge traditional ways of addressing the most pressing social issues in the US, they uncover deep inequities that are housed within these institutions. Ultimately, organizations practicing intersectional advocacy illuminate how to redraw the boundaries of policies in ways that transform US democracy to be more representative, equitable, and just.

English | ISBN: 1498551300 | 2018 | 160 pages | EPUB | 1403 KB
Intersectional Care for Black Boys in an Alternative School is an exploration of the possibilities that exist within educational spaces for Black male students when teachers care for these students while also acknowledging the intersectionality of Black male identity and the potential oppression and resilience that they experience as the result. Through examples from adolescent Black males and their teacher in an urban alternative school for those pushed out of traditional high school settings, ways that teachers can embody and enact intersectional care are revealed. This book explores the importance of the ethic of care in teacher student relationships for young Black men and the influence of identity constructions that produce positive and negative educational experiences of Black boys who are outside of traditional schooling. The voices of the young Black men are centered in this story as they describe experiences of marginalization in traditional high schools prior to attending their alternative school, which for them was a caring space. Cultivating positive environments and student teacher relationships with intersectional care represent important strategies to engage young Black men in education.
