Invasion! Rome Against the Cimbri, 113-101 BC

English | January 5, 2023 | ISBN: 1399097318 | 208 pages | PDF | 1.88 Mb
Partly as a result of poor commanders and partly because the Romans had an innate and misguided belief in the invincibility of their legions, the first battles against the Cimbri were a series of disasters. These culminated in the Battle of Arausio in 105 BC when two Roman armies were utterly destroyed.
Rome finally realized that their republic faced an existential threat, and made the necessary painful political and military changes that were needed to face that threat. Rome also found a commander who could take on the Cimbri. Caius Marius was a deeply flawed man – scheming, cautious to the point of cowardice, and quick to claim credit for the achievements of others. Nevertheless, he was a massive improvement on the leaders who had preceded him.

World War II is the defining conflict of the 20th century, one that created a line in the sands of history dividing the pre-war and post-war eras. In this epoch-defining conflict lies another definitive moment: the invasion of a 50-mile stretch of coast in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. This battle, also known as D-Day, was the pivot point of the war in Europe. Its success led to a nearly yearlong, bloody campaign that saw the liberation of France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands, followed by the final defeat of Hitler’s Third Reich. In the six lectures of D-Day Revisited: The Invasion of Normandy, Professor John C. McManus will take you back to this transformative moment in modern history and reveal how it succeeded. Along the way, you will better understand why it was a truly world-changing military operation-one that could easily have gone a different way.

Invasion On D-Day, the Press, and the Making of an American Narrative

Free Download Invasion On: D-Day, the Press, and the Making of an American Narrative by Dr. Stephen M Rusiecki USA (Ret.)
English | September 15, 2023 | ISBN: 168247920X | 368 pages | EPUB | 2.50 Mb
In Invasion On Stephen M. Rusiecki describes the process of how and why Americans developed a standing narrative of the World War II operation known as D-Day based upon a common, press-enabled, thematically framed narrative. This story of June 6, 1944 is the one which has endured for more than seven decades. How did this early, single narrative of the D-Day landings, hastily though deliberately constructed in real time by America’s radio networks and newspapers, come together on 6 June 1944 to become the story of that event in the years and decades after World War II? This version is what has dominated the imaginations and consciousness of Americans ever since.

E-Boat Alert Defending the Normandy Invasion Fleet

Free Download James Foster Tent- E-Boat Alert: Defending the Normandy Invasion Fleet
Naval Institute Press | 1996 | ISBN: 1557508054 | English | 344 pages | PDF | 102.97 MB
Combining newly released top-secret Admiralty reports, rare photographic materials, and extensive interviews with eyewitnesses from three nations, James Tent has produced a comprehensive study of a little-known episode of World War II – the campaign to defend the Normandy invasion fleet from Germany’s high-performance motor torpedo boats or Schnellboote, known to the Allies as "E-boats." Besides presenting a detailed account of naval operations at a crucial stage of the war in Europe, this history integrates many facets of modern warfare: the development of fast coastal craft; the creation of precision bombing units; the interaction of naval, air, and ground forces among both the Allies and the Germans; the harnessing of science and technology to meet changing military needs; and the use of various forms of intelligence – cryptanalysis, prisoner interrogation, photoreconnaissance, and photo-interpretation. While tracing these important technical considerations, the study also examines the human dimension of the forces arrayed against each other. In addition, it offers historical precedents for weapons and warships in which there is now renewed interest, namely, deep-penetration bombs and high-speed coastal combatants.

Author: David Hume
Narrator: Mark Elstob

Though David Hume (1711-1776) is now best known for his role as a prominent philosopher of the Enlightenment rather than an historian, it was his momentous six-volume The History of England that really brought him national attention during his lifetime. It came out in instalments between 1754 and 1762 and proved an instant success. As it covers the ground from Julius Caesar to James II and the Glorious Revolution, it may not be so surprising that it is now overshadowed by A Treatise on Human Nature and An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. Surely its limited purview – taking English history only to 1688, virtually a century before Hume – would seem of limited interest to 21st century readers? This is not the case. Hume undertook widespread and careful research in his preparation for his History, as is evidenced by the voluminous references underpinning his information.
