Abductive Reasoning: Logical Investigations into Discovery and Explanation is a much awaited original contribution to the study of abductive reasoning, providing logical foundations and a rich sample of pertinent applications. Divided into three parts on the conceptual framework, the logical foundations, and the applications, this monograph takes the reader for a comprehensive and erudite tour through the taxonomy of abductive reasoning, via the logical workings of abductive inference ending with applications pertinent to scientific explanation, empirical progress, pragmatism and belief revision.

Evolutionary Search and the Job Shop Investigations on Genetic Algorithms for Production Scheduling

Free Download Evolutionary Search and the Job Shop: Investigations on Genetic Algorithms for Production Scheduling By Dr. Dirk C. Mattfeld (auth.)
1996 | 153 Pages | ISBN: 3790809179 | PDF | 4 MB
Production scheduling dictates highly constrained mathematical models with complex and often contradicting objectives. Evolutionary algorithms can be formulated almost independently of the detailed shaping of the problems under consideration. As one would expect, a weak formulation of the problem in the algorithm comes along with a quite inefficient search. This book discusses the suitability of genetic algorithms for production scheduling and presents an approach which produces results comparable with those of more tailored optimization techniques.

Galaxy Merger Identification Methods, and Investigations of the Role of Mergers in Galaxy Evolution

This book offers new findings on the impact of galaxy mergers on galaxy evolution and related processes. Galaxies are astronomical objects composed of stars, gas, and dark matter. The main pathway for galaxy evolution in the currently accepted model for structure growth is through interactions and mergers, or the process in which multiple galaxies interact, collide, and end up as one larger galaxy. Galaxy interactions and mergers are also considered to drive various processes pertaining to galaxy evolution, such as star formation, active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, and chemical evolution. As such, not only are merging galaxy systems important to understand galaxy structure growth in a cosmological context, they are also unique laboratories to study evolutionary processes taking place in galaxies. However, despite their importance, the relative role of galaxy mergers on galaxy evolution is still heavily contested. One reason for this is difficulty in identifying merger galaxies in observational data. Many different methods have been adopted for merger galaxy identification, but none of them are perfect. Moreover, the use of differing selection methods can result in widely different samples, which can alter statistical results. As such, a novel, robust method for merger identification is required to deepen our understanding of galaxy mergers. In this book, we introduce new methods to identify galaxy mergers from observational data. The first method combines the use of visual identification-both of optical and kinematic images-with spectroscopic pair identification. The second is machine learning based, using a training method called fine-tuning, an application of transfer learning. A pre-trained model on galaxy images is further fine-tuned using a sample of synthetic galaxy images, to make a classifier for merger identification. Using samples identified by our methods, the author conducts three studies: the impact of mergers on galaxy chemical evolution, the effect of galaxy local environment on merging activity, and the connection between mergers and AGN activity. This book is mainly intended for astrophysicists, particularly those studying galaxies, however is open for all to read.

Ragnar’s Guide to Interviews, Investigations, and Interrogations How to Conduct Them, How to Survive Them

Free Download Ragnar Benson, "Ragnar’s Guide to Interviews, Investigations, and Interrogations: How to Conduct Them, How to Survive Them"
English | ISBN: 158160095X | 2000 | 110 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Most Paladin readers know Ragnar Benson as a survivalist, a powder monkey, a trapper, a hunter and a dispenser of survival medicine, but how many know that he has been involved in the PI business for more than 25 years? In this, his first book on the subject of investigations, Ragnar offers readers two books in one. He reveals how PIs, cops and military interrogators conduct interviews, investigations and interrogations, and he also shows prospective witnesses how to survive them. For investigators, he shares his professional secrets and real-life scenarios for creating effective pretexts for any situation, opening up a witness and keeping him talking, recognizing and "listening" to nonverbal clues, and deciding whether to use honey or vinegar to get the desired results. Then he turns the tables on his fellow investigators and gives potential witnesses specific tips for avoiding – or at least surviving – the tactics, techniques and tricks favored by skilled investigators. Whether you want to be an investigator or avoid one, you won’t want to miss this book.
