October 1917 Revolution A Century Later

Free Download Samir Amin, "October 1917 Revolution: A Century Later"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1988832055 | EPUB | pages: 124 | 0.2 mb
Great revolutions make history. Conservative resistance and counter-revolutions only delay their progress. The French revolution invented modern politics and democracy, the Russian revolution paved the way for the socialist transition, while the Chinese revolution connected the emancipation of those peoples oppressed by imperialism with the path to socialism. These revolutions are great precisely because they are bearers of undertakings that are far ahead of the immediate demands of their time. beacons that illuminate the still unfinished struggles of the peoples for the realization of these goals. It is impossible to understand the contemporary world by ignoring these great revolutions. To commemorate these revolutions, says Samir Amin, one needs both to assess their ambitions (the utopia of today will be the reality of tomorrow), and to understand the reasons for their temporary setbacks. Conservative and reactionary minds refuse to do so-they wish us to believe that great revolutions have been nothing more than unfortunate accidents, that the peoples who have made them were carried away by their deceitful enthusiasm, diversions from the normal current of history. This collection of essays helps to situate the lessons of the October 1917 Russian Revolution from a perspective of 100 years.

The Later Years of Paul Keres Grandmaster of Chess

Free Download Harry Golombek, Sam Sloan, "The Later Years of Paul Keres Grandmaster of Chess"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 4871875423 | PDF | pages: 185 | 6.1 mb
This is the autobiography of Paul Keres. It is the third and final volume in a series of three books. The other two volumes are The Early Games of Paul Keres Grandmaster of Chess ISBN 4871875407 and The Middle Years of Paul Keres Grandmaster of Chess ISBN 4871875415. The third volume of Keres’ selected games contains the games the grandmaster thinks best from the last phase in his career, and is concerned with the decade 1952-62. During this period he met and defeated practically all the great chess-masters of our time, and this selection includes games won against opponents ranging from Botvinnik and Smyslov to Tal and Spassky. Abounding in subtlety and brilliance, the games form a perfect model for the aspiring young player, and those who have read the earlier two volumes will know how exhaustive and informative the notes of the games are. Never before has a writer given such an insight into the workings of the mind of a great chess master as Keres has done here. Harry Golombek, who has translated and edited the book, is Chess Correspondent of The Times and the Observer. He has three times won the British Championship and has figured in the prize list of the Championship on no less than eleven occasions. Paul Keres was born on January 7, 1916 in Narva in what is now Estonia. In this, the third volume, he covers the period from 1952 to 1962, when he kept coming close to earning the right to play a match for the world chess championship, but never quite made it. Keres had a run of four successive second places in Candidates’ tournaments: 1953, 1956, 1959, 1962.

The Law of Treason in England in the Later Middle Ages

Free Download J. G. Bellamy, "The Law of Treason in England in the Later Middle Ages"
English | 2004 | pages: 288 | ISBN: 0521526388 | DJVU | 1,8 mb
Professor Bellamy places the theory of treason in its political setting and analyses the part it played in the development of legal and political thought in this period. He pays particular attention to the Statute of Treason of 1352, an act with a notable effect on later constitutional history and which, in the opinion of Edward Coke, had a legal importance second only to that of Magna Carta. He traces the English law of treason to Roman and Germanic origins, and discusses the development of royal attitudes towards rebellion, the judicial procedures used to try and condemn suspected traitors, and the interaction of the law of treason and constitutional ideas.

Building W. B. Yeats’s Later Poetry The Tower Poems

Free Download Tomoko Iwatsubo, "Building W. B. Yeats’s Later Poetry: The Tower Poems"
English | ISBN: 303160783X | 2024 | 300 pages | EPUB, PDF | 10 MB + 10 MB
This book explores Yeats’s later poetry through the metaphor of the poetic tower, where different kinds of ‘building’ – architectural, textual, political and symbolic – were closely interrelated. It chronologically examines Yeats’s tower poems, composed during a period of dramatic personal and national transformation, from 1915 to 1932. Within a year after the Easter Rising in Dublin, Yeats acquired a half-ruined Norman tower in County Galway, Ireland, which had enthralled him for the past two decades, and textually and architecturally constructed it into a focus of his life and work. Interweaving the account of the renovation of the actual building and the textual construction in the socio-historical contexts, the book reveals the evolution of Yeats’s multiplex tower as an organizing principle of his later poetry. Using the archive of correspondence and manuscript materials of relevant poems, including those which have thus far escaped close attention, the book offers close textual-genetic analyses and a diachronic view of Yeats’s tower poetry, which, with its foundations laid decades earlier, he built in the collections from

English | ISBN: 150174674X | 2019 | 246 pages | AZW3 | 455 KB
This book studies attitudes toward secular literature during the later Middle Ages. Exploring two related medieval justifications of literary pleasure―one finding hygienic or therapeutic value in entertainment, and another stressing the psychological and ethical rewards of taking time out from work in order to refresh oneself―Glending Olson reveals that, contrary to much recent opinion, many medieval writers and thinkers accepted delight and enjoyment as valid goals of literature without always demanding moral profit as well.

Economic Growth England in the Later Middle Ages

Free Download A. R. Bridbury, "Economic Growth: England in the Later Middle Ages"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1138647837, 1138647845 | EPUB | pages: 116 | 1.4 mb
First published in 1962, this book challenges the notion that the later Middle Ages failed to sustain the economic growth of earlier centuries, suggesting that historians have been preoccupied with absolute levels of output over more important questions of output per head. It also argues they have ignored the disastrous fall in living standards in the thirteenth century and the astonishing rise that occurred later. Using national taxation records and records of urban government, as well as research from fields ranging from parliamentary history to statistics of foreign trade, the author attempts to establish that the later Middle Ages has also been wrongly defamed in political affairs.
