Shi’ite Lebanon Transnational Religion and the Making of National Identities

Free Download Roschanack Shaery-Eisenlohr, "Shi’ite Lebanon: Transnational Religion and the Making of National Identities"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0231144261, 023114427X | EPUB | pages: 312 | 3.6 mb
By recasting the relationship between religion and nationalism in the Middle East, Roschanack Shaery-Eisenlohr proposes a new framework for understanding Shi’ite politics in Lebanon. Her study draws on a variety of untapped sources, reconsidering not only the politics of the established leadership of Shi’ites but also institutional and popular activities of identity production. Shaery-Eisenlohr traces current Shi’ite politics of piety and authenticity to the coexistence formula in Lebanon and argues that engaging in the discourses of piety and coexistence is a precondition to cultural citizenship in Lebanon. As she demonstrates, debates over the nature of Christianity and Islam and Christian-Muslim dialogue are in fact intertwined with power struggles at the state level.

1995 | 300 Pages | ISBN: 0520200861 | PDF | 6 MB
Leila Fawaz’s pioneering study tells the story of the 1860 civil wars that began in Mount Lebanon and spilled over into Damascus. This period witnessed the most severe outbreak of sectarian violence in the history of Ottoman Syria and Lebanon. The author’s close analytical narrative of the dramatic events of that year is set against the broader themes of nineteenth-century social, political, and economic change.Fawaz shows how social conflict, including "ethnic" civil wars, cannot be explained without analyzing the regional and international currents that play upon both central state power and local autonomy. She also demonstrates the important role of the communal balance between social and political institutions within regions.Fawaz’s new insights into the formation of sectarian identities and conflict will make An Occasion for War essential reading for all students of the modern Middle East.

The Syrian Refugee Crisis in Lebanon

Free Download Robert G. Rabil, "The Syrian Refugee Crisis in Lebanon "
English | ISBN: 1498535143 | 2018 | 150 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book examines the unfolding of the Syrian refugee crisis in relation to the spillover of the Syrian civil war in Lebanon and against the background of Lebanon-Syria relations and Lebanon’s socio-political, cultural, legal, and economic conditions. It surveys Lebanon’s response plans to the refugee crisis as part of the development of the international response plans to address the protection and needs of the Syrian refugees and Palestinian refugees from Syria, as well as the impacted host communities and institutions. At the same time, this book emphasizes the dramatic shift in popular and institutional attitudes towards the refugees as a response to and as a growth of the sheer magnitude of the refugee crisis, which made Lebanon the only country in modern history with the highest per capita concentration of refugees in the world. By examining these attitudes against the background of achievements and failures of the response plans, the impact of the crisis on state institutions on the local and national levels, and the collective consciousness of a nation barely surviving the scars of its civil war, this book not only underscores the deepening tragedy of Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, but also the consequential tragedy of many Lebanese, who have been forced into poverty and whose livelihoods have been affected by insecurity and the almost complete collapse of social services. As a result, the tragedy of the Syrian refugee crisis has become an international crisis affecting vulnerable persons across nationalities, and, unless it is addressed diplomatically and its response plans sufficiently funded, the tragedy will only deepen across continents.
