Cultural Linguistics and (Re)conceptualized Tradition Past in Present

Free Download Cultural Linguistics and (Re)conceptualized Tradition: Past in Present
English | 2024 | ISBN: 981976324X | 474 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 34 MB
This book offers a cutting-edge compilation of studies on (re)conceptualized traditions in a wide variety of discourses such as the language of emotion, folklore, religion and morality, the natural environment, idioms and proverbs. It also raises complex theoretical and methodological questions regarding the cultural-cognitive linguistic approach to metaphors and figurative language, embodiment, diachronic and corpus linguistics, and pragmatics. The languages under scrutiny range from well-documented to minority varieties, and even to endangered languages and dialects. Building from the assertion that cultural conceptualizations are rendered as manifestations of the interplay between language, culture, and the collective cognition of communities as handed down from generation to generation, this edited book discovers and rebuilds traditional cultural cognition. Employing analytical tools provided by the cultural-cognitive linguistic framework, the authors investigate how the field is being revitalized and renegotiated in present-day cultural contexts, and how it contributes to shaping our contemporary understanding of the world. It is useful for academics and students interested in cultural and cognitive linguistics, ethnosemantics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, applied linguistics, linguistic anthropology, and religious studies.

The Linguistics of Vocabulary

Free Download Christine Hansen, "The Linguistics of Vocabulary "
English | ISBN: 1536138606 | 2018 | 119 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In the history of Early-Modern Ukrainian culture; specifically, two philosophical concepts-dobro and blaho are the focus here. Both are related to notions of good and wellbeing, but contextual nuances may affect their discrete meanings rather significantly. The authors consider the manner in which these two words functioned in the works by the prominent 18th century Ukrainian philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda by way of a study based on a close reading of thirteen of his colloquies. Following this, the authors aim to investigate the relationship between morphological awareness and reading in a language environment which is phonologically transparent and morphologically challenging, i.e., the Czech language environment. The study showed that morphological awareness affected reading speed and accuracy more than phonological awareness. Paradoxically, morphological awareness affected reading comprehension less than phonological awareness – authors interpreted this to be due to superficial reading style which manifested itself regardless of student age, gender or IQ. The concluding chapter aims to discuss relevant underlying theories and review previous empirical studies on language learning in both F2F and synchronous computer-mediated communication, as the nature of technology- or computer-mediated communication makes enhanced incidental learning feasible. Structural Linguistics in the 21st Century

Free Download Geoffrey Sampson, "Structural Linguistics in the 21st Century"
English | ISBN: 1036412598 | 2024 | 262 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book is a sequel to Geoffrey Sampson’s well-received textbook Schools of Linguistics. Linguistics changed around the millennium; the advent of cheap air travel and the internet meant that geographical distance ceased to be a barrier to scholarly interaction, so new developments are no longer grouped into separate "schools" located in different places. Consequently, the best way to show how linguistics is flowering in our time is through a sampler displaying individual examples of recent advances. Sampson offers such a sampler, describing two dozen of the most interesting innovations in the subject to have emerged in the present century. And he includes a few looks back at how the approaches described in Schools of Linguistics panned out in the closing years of the old century, before they evolved into―or made way for―today’s more realistic and more diverse linguistics.

This volume contains 22 revised papers originally presented at the 17th International Conference on Historical Linguistics, held August 2005 in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The papers cover a broad range of languages, including well-studied languages of Europe but also Aramaic, Zoque and Uto-Aztecan, Japanese and Korean, Afrikaans, and the Pilbara languages of Australia. The theoretical approaches taken are equally diverse, often bringing together aspects of ‘formal’ and ‘functional’ theories in a single contribution. Many of the chapters provide fresh data, including several drawing on data from electronic corpora. Topics range from traditional comparative reconstruction to prosodic change and the role of processing in syntactic change.
