Ritual and Earthquakes in Constantinople Liturgy, Ecology, and Empire

Free Download Mark Roosien, "Ritual and Earthquakes in Constantinople: Liturgy, Ecology, and Empire"
English | ISBN: 1009427288 | 2024 | 218 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Located on the North Anatolian Fault, Constantinople was frequently shaken by earthquakes over the course of its history. This book discusses religious responses to these events between the fourth and the tenth century AD. The church in Constantinople commemorated several earthquakes that struck the city, prescribing an elaborate liturgical rite celebrated annually for each occasion. These rituals were means by which city-dwellers created meaning from disaster and renegotiated their relationships to God and the land around them in the face of its most destabilizing ecological characteristic: seismicity. Mark Roosien argues that ritual and theological responses to earthquakes shaped Byzantine conceptions of God and the environment and transformed Constantinople’s self-understanding as the capital of the oikoumene and center of divine action in history. The book enhances our understanding of Byzantine Christian religion and culture, and provides a new, interdisciplinary framework for understanding Byzantine views of the natural world.

The Celebration of the Saints in Byzantine Art and Liturgy

English | ISBN: 0367601796 | 2020 | 376 pages | EPUB | 27 MB
The studies in this volume all deal with images and texts that relate to the veneration of the saints in Byzantium after the 9th century. Some papers are devoted to the church calendar and the annual commemorations of hundreds of saints through liturgical poetry and sequences of isolated images in fresco, icon painting and illuminated manuscripts. Others are concerned with the longer and rarer, narrative cycles devoted to the life of a single saint, cycles found mainly in fresco and on the so-called vita icons that first appear in the East in the late 12th century. Additional studies deal with the developing role of icons in liturgical ceremonies, and with images of a saint being approached by a supplicant or patron. A final section is devoted to places made holy by the saints, and to their holy relics.

Syriac Liturgy in India Syro-Malabar, Malankara Orthodox and Marthoma Liturgies

Free Download Baby Varghese, "Syriac Liturgy in India: Syro-Malabar, Malankara Orthodox and Marthoma Liturgies"
English | ISBN: 3447119640 | 2023 | 84 pages | PDF | 1378 KB
About four million Syriac Christians, living in the South Indian State of Kerala with important diaspora in India and outside, are following East or West Syriac liturgical traditions. They are popularly known as St Thomas Christians, as they are believed to have been evangelized by the apostle Thomas. As these Christians were in intermittent relationship with the Syriac Christianity in Mesopotamia since the early centuries, they are also known as Syriac Christians. At least since the sixth century, perhaps fourth century, they were following East Syriac Liturgy. In the sixteenth century several East Syriac Prelates, both Catholics and non-Catholics, introduced the East Syriac liturgy in its final form. Since the middle of the sixteenth century nearly half of them are following the West Syriac liturgy. Their liturgical practices provide examples of liturgical conservatism and radical reforms. Now the liturgical texts have been translated into Malayalam, language of Kerala, and English, Hindi or other regional language for the use of the diaspora. However, Syriac is used by several clergy. Syro-Malabar liturgy is a highly latinised form of East Syriac liturgy, followed in the Eastern-Catholic community. Malankara Orthodox Church follows the liturgical rites of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch. History of the Marthoma liturgy, a reformed version of the West Syriac liturgy and used by the Reformed group, is presented here for the first time for the students of Syriac Christianity and liturgy.
