Modern strategists talk about "force multipliers," and, for air operations, air-to-air refueling is without doubt the greatest force multiplier of all. In-flight refueling has allowed not only the longest bombing missions in history but also persistence in air defense, transport reach and flexibility in ground-attack tasks. Covering a range of refuelers – including the Boeing KC-97 and KC-135, Vickers Valiant, Handley Page Victor, Lockheed TriStar, Vickers VC10, McDonnell Douglas KC-10 and the Airbus MRTT Voyager – this book details the history of air-to-air refueling and celebrates the key role played by tanker aircraft in the application of air power around the world.

The Military Sniper since 1914

Free Download Martin Pegler, Ramiro Bujeiro, "The Military Sniper since 1914"
English | 2001 | pages: 66 | ISBN: 1841761419 | PDF | 20,7 mb
It was only in World War I (1914-1918) that the combination of high quality service rifles and new telescopic sights brought the true ‘sniper’ to the battlefield as a distinct specialist. By 1918 the scout-sniper’s value as an observer and gatherer of intelligence was as important as his lethal skills, but these were disregarded in the interwar years. From 1939-45 most armies had to train and equip snipers from scratch, but they were to play a major role in all theatres of war. Famously, on the Russian Front it was a role in which women excelled. This title recounts the development of weapons, sights, tactics and clothing in all the major armies, from Flanders to the Gulf.

Including more than two hundred vintage photographs and illustrations, Portsmouth Harbor’s Military and Naval Heritage chronicles the history of the Piscataqua River’s naval shipyard and harbor defenses. Long before it became home to one of the U.S. Navy’s first federal shipyards, the harbor at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine, was protected by gun batteries, mainly at Fort Point, New Castle, New Hampshire. By the end of World War II, modern concrete batteries mounting guns of ever longer range had been constructed at this and three other forts straddling the river’s mouth. These fortifications reflected the increasingly important role of the shipyard, dedicated after 1917 to building submarines that contributed significantly to the World War II victory.

In The Trojan War as Military History, the author’s starting point is the fact that the Iliad, notwithstanding the fantastical/mythological elements (the involvement of gods and demigods), is the earliest detailed description of warfare we have. Stripping away the myths, Manousos Kambouris analyses the epic and combines it with other textual and archaeological evidence to produce a coherent narrative of the conflict and of Bronze Age warfare in the Aegean.
