Natural products are a marvel of evolution. Plants are chemical factories and have produced a vast number of highly diverse and interesting natural substances with their extraordinary properties, which we humans have been using for centuries to relieve and cure diseases. At the latest since the discovery of penicillin, natural substances have become an important source of medicines, but we know only very few of the presumably many millions that are still waiting to be discovered. Important antibiotics, immunosuppressants, anticancer agents, hormones, and antiviral agents are among the natural products. But do natural products still matter in the age of biotechnology and genetic engineering? Yes, more than ever, because medicinal chemists draw creative inspiration for their syntheses from nature to develop the next blockbuster in medicine.

London Dispersion Forces in Molecules, Solids and Nano-structures An Introduction to Physical Models and Computational Methods

Free Download János Ángyán, John Dobson, Georg Jansen, "London Dispersion Forces in Molecules, Solids and Nano-structures: An Introduction to Physical Models and Computational Methods"
English | 2020 | pages: 456 | ISBN: 1782620451 | PDF | 11,6 mb
London dispersion interactions are responsible for numerous phenomena in physics, chemistry and biology. Recent years have seen the development of new, physically well-founded models, and dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) is now a hot topic of research. This book is an overview of current understanding of the physical origin and modelling of London dispersion forces manifested at an atomic level. It covers a wide range of system, from small intermolecular complexes, to organic molecules and crystalline solids, through to biological macromolecules and nanostructures. In presenting a broad overview of the of the physical foundations of dispersion forces, the book provides theoretical, physical and synthetic chemists, as well as solid-state physicists, with a systematic understanding of the origins and consequences of these ubiquitous interactions. The presentation is designed to be accessible to anyone with intermediate undergraduate mathematics, physics and chemistry.

In Situ Analysis of Cellular Functional Molecules

Free Download Huangxian Ju, Bo Tang, Lin Ding, "In Situ Analysis of Cellular Functional Molecules"
English | 2020 | pages: 266 | ISBN: 1788017226 | PDF | 13,4 mb
In recent years, in situ analysis of cellular functional molecules has attracted considerable interest as it can provide spatially or temporally resolved information of these essential molecules on/within living cells in a non-invasive way. In Situ Analysis of Cellular Functional Molecules introduces the tailor-made design of detection probes as well as schemes from a top-down perspective according to the unique characteristics of cellular functional molecules. The latest methodological developments, including enhancement of detection sensitivity and specificity, precision localization, implementation of dynamic tracking, and acquirement of quantitative functional information for various important functional molecules is discussed in detail. Written by leaders in the field, this book will provide a comprehensive overview to scientists in academia and professionals in industry working on different aspects of cellular analysis and cell biology.

Brain Immune System Signal Molecules in Protection from Aerobic and Anaerobic Infections

Free Download Brain Immune System Signal Molecules in Protection from Aerobic and Anaerobic Infections By Armen A. Galoyan (auth.)
2012 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 1461436664 | PDF | 4 MB
Proline-rich polypeptides – in particular (PRP-1) galarmin and its structural analogues – are, when isolated from the neurosecretory granules of neurohypophysis of humans and animals, a new type of hypothalamic peptides. They work against aerobic, anaerobic, gram-positive, and gram-negative microorganisms in vivo, and do not have etiotropic properties. They are unique and capable substitutes to antibiotics, and, moreover, may be effective against strains, such as MRSA, that develop resistance to antibiotics. Galarmin, a component of the brain neuroendocrine system produced by the neurosecretory cells of hypothalamus, possesses immunomodulative, neuroprotective, antioxidant, antitumorigenic and hematopoietic properties. Moreover, galarmin and its structural analogues are powerful anti-inflammatory compounds. In addition to presenting a full overview of the neuroimmune system, it emphasizes the antibacterial, neuroprotective, and neuroregenerative properties of proline-rich polypeptides. It investigates the mechanism of galarmin’s action during different infectious processes, where it targets such dangerous pathogens as Bacillus anthracis, Clostridium perfringens, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Methycillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This research is important from both a theoretical and a clinical point of view, creating new prospects for the modern pharmaceutical industry and neuroendocrine, neuroimmunological sciences.Dr. Galoyan is a pioneer of the specialized field of neuroimmunology. During his 45-year long career, he has discovered a neuroendocrine immune system of the brain and identified a new type of brain cytokines: proline-rich polypeptides. The most important of these, PRP-1 (galarmin) has been shown to possess antibacterial properties and protect from certain neurotoxins.

Arterial Chemoreception From Molecules to Systems

Free Download Arterial Chemoreception: From Molecules to Systems By Gregg L. Semenza, Nanduri R. Prabhakar (auth.), Colin A. Nurse, Constancio Gonzalez, Chris Peers, Nanduri Prabhakar (eds.)
2012 | 406 Pages | ISBN: 9400745834 | PDF | 10 MB
Arterial chemoreceptors are unique structures which continuously monitor changes in arterial blood oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose, and acid. Alterations in these gases are almost instantaneously sensed by arterial chemoreceptors and relayed into a physiological response which restores blood homeostasis. Arterial Chemoreception contains updated material regarding the physiology of the primary arterial chemoreceptor; the carotid body. Moreover, this book also explores tantalizing evidence regarding the contribution of the aortic bodies, chromaffin cells, lung neuroepithelial bodies, and brainstem areas involved in monitoring changes in blood gases. Furthermore this collection includes data showing the critical importance of these chemoreceptors in the pathophysiology of human disease and possible therapeutic treatments. This book is a required text for any researcher in the field of arterial chemoreception for years to come. It is also a critical text for physicians searching for bench-to-bedside treatments for heart failure, sleep apnea, and pulmonary hypertension.

Arthropod Biology and Evolution Molecules, Development, Morphology

Free Download Arthropod Biology and Evolution: Molecules, Development, Morphology By Alessandro Minelli, Geoffrey Boxshall, Giuseppe Fusco
2013 | 450 Pages | ISBN: 3642361595 | PDF | 15 MB
More than two thirds of all living organisms described to date belong to the phylum Arthropoda. But their diversity, as measured in terms of species number, is also accompanied by an amazing disparity in terms of body form, developmental processes, and adaptations to every inhabitable place on Earth, from the deepest marine abysses to the earth surface and the air. The Arthropoda also include one of the most fashionable and extensively studied of all model organisms, the fruit-fly, whose name is not only linked forever to Mendelian and population genetics, but has more recently come back to centre stage as one of the most important and more extensively investigated models in developmental genetics. This approach has completely changed our appreciation of some of the most characteristic traits of arthropods as are the origin and evolution of segments, their regional and individual specialization, and the origin and evolution of the appendages. At approximately the same time as developmental genetics was eventually turning into the major agent in the birth of evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo), molecular phylogenetics was challenging the traditional views on arthropod phylogeny, including the relationships among the four major groups: insects, crustaceans, myriapods, and chelicerates. In the meantime, palaeontology was revealing an amazing number of extinct forms that on the one side have contributed to a radical revisitation of arthropod phylogeny, but on the other have provided evidence of a previously unexpected disparity of arthropod and arthropod-like forms that often challenge a clear-cut delimitation of the phylum.
