The Life Beyond Molecules and Genes How Our Adaptations Make Us Alive

Free Download Stephen Rothman, "The Life Beyond Molecules and Genes: How Our Adaptations Make Us Alive"
English | 2009 | pages: 241 | ISBN: 1599472503 | PDF | 0,6 mb
What makes us alive? Is it our DNA? Our genetics? Is it our atomic composition that gives us life? Somehow, all of this feels radically dissonant from our everyday experience. In Life Beyond Molecules and Genes, experimental biologist Stephen Rothman makes the bold case that it is, in fact, our adaptive abilities, hewn by evolution, that make us alive. In making this point, he reveals a hidden harmony between science and life as we live it.

Marine Bioactive Molecules for Biomedical and Pharmacotherapeutic Applications

Free Download Marine Bioactive Molecules for Biomedical and Pharmacotherapeutic Applications
English | 2024 | ISBN: 9819967694 | 577 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 24 MB
This book explores cutting-edge research on the discovery and application of marine bioactive molecules for biomedical and pharmacotherapeutic purposes. The book begins by delving into the bioprospection of marine sponge microbiomes for bioactive metabolites using advanced metagenomics tools. It then explores metagenome mining approaches for the discovery of marine microbial natural products. The use of marine-derived fungi as a source of anticancer secondary metabolites is also discussed. The book then turns to the biomedical applications of marine-derived biomaterials, including marine biopolymers in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Marine-derived pharmaceuticals and polymeric nanostructures for cancer treatment are also examined. Next, the book looks at the use of marine microbial sources for the synthesis of metallic nanomaterials, prospects, current development, and challenges in nanomedicine. The book continues by exploring the treasure trove of natural polymers for tissue engineering in the marine environment. It also discusses the immunomodulatory and therapeutic potential of marine-derived astaxanthin, current developments, and prospects. Finally, the book concludes by exploring the recent progress in marine-derived nutraceuticals and marine phytoplankton bioactive compounds and their applications in medicine.

Minorities and Small Numbers from Molecules to Organisms in Biology Toward a New Understanding of Biological Phenomena

Free Download Minorities and Small Numbers from Molecules to Organisms in Biology: Toward a New Understanding of Biological Phenomena by Takeharu Nagai, Yuichi Togashi
English | EPUB (True) | 2018 | 151 Pages | ISBN : 9811320829 | 8.9 MB
This book provides an accessible introduction to an exciting new field of life science in which the focus is on small numbers of molecules and minorities within cell populations and their significance for the understanding of biological phenomena. Numbers, or quantitative data, are attracting more attention in cell biology following, for example, determination of the absolute copy number of each protein species in each bacterial cell and the recognition of leader cells that drive collective cell migration. Within this context, the authors present recent advances in experimental techniques, biological findings, and theories. A variety of cutting-edge topics and issues are addressed, with explanation of the ways in which recent developments in the field cast light on seemingly straightforward but difficult-to-answer questions. Readers will learn that we are on the verge of a paradigm shift as the importance of cooperation among groups of molecules in live cells is acknowledged. The book is designed to be enjoyable to read and easy to understand. It will be of interest for a wide range of readers, including young researchers and undergraduate/high school students.

Many-Body Methods for Atoms, Molecules and Clusters

Free Download Many-Body Methods for Atoms, Molecules and Clusters by Jochen Schirmer
English | EPUB (True) | 2018 | 330 Pages | ISBN : 3319936018 | 16.4 MB
This book provides an introduction to many-body methods for applications in quantum chemistry. These methods, originating in field-theory, offer an alternative to conventional quantum-chemical approaches to the treatment of the many-electron problem in molecules. Starting with a general introduction to the atomic and molecular many-electron problem, the book then develops a stringent formalism of field-theoretical many-body theory, culminating in the diagrammatic perturbation expansions of many-body Green’s functions or propagators in terms of Feynman diagrams. It also introduces and analyzes practical computational methods, such as the field-tested algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC) schemes. The ADC concept can also be established via a wave-function based procedure, referred to as intermediate state representation (ISR), which bridges the gap between propagator and wave-function formulations. Based on the current rapid increase in computer power and the development of efficient computational methods, quantum chemistry has emerged as a potent theoretical tool for treating ever-larger molecules and problems of chemical and physical interest. Offering an introduction to many-body methods, this book appeals to advanced students interested in an alternative approach to the many-electron problem in molecules, and is suitable for any courses dealing with computational methods in quantum chemistry.

Bonding in Electron-Rich Molecules Qualitative Valence-Bond Approach via Increased-Valence Structures (2024)

Free Download Bonding in Electron-Rich Molecules: Qualitative Valence-Bond Approach via Increased-Valence Structures by Richard D. Harcourt
English | PDF (True) | 2016 | 328 Pages | ISBN : 3319166751 | 11.7 MB
This second edition was updated to include some of the recent developments, such as "increased-valence" structures for 3-electron-3-centre bonding, benzene, electron conduction and reaction mechanisms, spiral chain O4 polymers and recoupled-pair bonding. The author provides qualitative molecular orbital and valence-bond descriptions of the electronic structures for primarily electron-rich molecules, with strong emphasis given to the valence-bond approach that uses "increased-valence" structures. He describes how "long-bond" Lewis structures as well as standard Lewis structures are incorporated into "increased-valence" structures for electron-rich molecules. "Increased-valence" structures involve more electrons in bonding than do their component Lewis structures, and are used to provide interpretations for molecular electronic structure, bond properties and reactivities. Attention is also given to Pauling "3-electron bonds", which are usually diatomic components of "increased-valence" structures for electron-rich molecules.
