After 1945, state patriotism of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe was characterized by the widespread use of national symbols. In communist Hungary the party (MKP) widely celebrated national holidays, national heroes, erected national statues, and employed national street names. This ‘socialist patriotism’ had its origin in the ‘national line’ of the Comintern, established on Soviet instructions following the German invasion of the Soviet Union. At that time Stalin called the parties of the Comintern to oppose the Germans by issuing the call for national liberation. This policy continued after 1945 when, as an aid in the struggle for power, the MKP presented itself as both the ‘heir to the traditions of the nations’ and the ‘only true representative of the interest of the Hungarian people’. Paradoxically however, the Soviet origins of the national line were also one of the main obstacles to its success as the MKP could not put forward national demands if these conflicted with Soviet interests. Martin Mevius’ pioneering study reveals that what had started as a tactical measure in 1941 had become the self-image of party and state in 1953 and that the ultimate loyalty to the Soviet Union worked to the detriment of the national party – the MKP never rid itself of the label ‘agents of Moscow’.

A memoir of service by the American ambassador who was on the diplomatic front lines when Putin invaded Ukraine, Midnight in Moscow is the first behind-the-scenes account of how U.S.-Russia relations hit their nadir-and a playbook for our unfolding confrontation. For weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, John J. Sullivan, the U.S. ambassador in Moscow, was warning that it would happen. When troops finally crossed the border, he was woken in the middle of the night with a prearranged code. The signal was even more bracing than the February cold: it meant that Sullivan needed to collect his bodyguards and get to the embassy as soon as possible. The war had begun, and the world would never be the same. In Midnight in Moscow, Sullivan leads listeners into the offices of the U.S. embassy and the halls of the Kremlin during this climactic period-among the most dangerous since World War II.

The Red Hotel Moscow 1941, the Metropol Hotel, and the Untold Story of Stalin’s Propaganda War [Audiobook]

English | ASIN: B0D325YZPL | 2024 | 12 hours and 36 minutes | M4B@128 kbps | 701 MB
Author: Alan Philps
Narrator: Michael Langan

In 1941, Lenin’s body was moved from his tomb on Red Square and taken to Siberia. By 1945, a victorious Stalin had turned a poor country into a victorious superpower. Over the course of those four years, Stalin, at Churchill’s insistence, accepted an Anglo-American press corps in Moscow to cover the Eastern Front. Stalin imposed the most draconian controls-unbending censorship, no visits to the battlefront, and a ban on contact with ordinary citizens. The Red Hotel explores this gilded cage of the Metropol Hotel. On the surface, this regime served Stalin well: his plans to control Eastern Europe as a Sovietized "outer empire" were never reported and the most outrageous Soviet lies went unchallenged. But beneath the surface, the Metropol was roiling with intrigue. Using British archives and Soviet sources, the unique role of the women of the Metropol, both as consummate propagandists and secret dissenters, is told for the first time. At the end of the war when Lenin returned to Red Square, the reporters went home, but the memory of Stalin’s ruthless control of the wartime narrative lived on in the Kremlin. The story of the Metropol mirrors the struggles of our own modern era.

English | ASIN: B0D2375D27 | 2024 | MP3@64 kbps | ~12:18:00 | 338 MB
In October 1941, Hitler launched Operation Typhoon-the German drive to capture Moscow and knock the Soviet Union out of the war. As the last chance to escape the dire implications of a winter campaign, Hitler directed seventy-five German divisions, almost two million men and three of Germany’s four panzer groups into the offensive, resulting in huge victories at Viaz’ma and Briansk-among the biggest battles of the Second World War.
David Stahel’s groundbreaking new account of Operation Typhoon captures the perspectives of both the German high command and individual soldiers, revealing that despite success on the battlefield the wider German war effort was in far greater trouble than is often acknowledged. Germany’s hopes of final victory depended on the success of the October offensive, but the autumn conditions and the stubborn resistance of the Red Army ensured that the capture of Moscow was anything but certain.
