Narrative And The Making Of US National Security

Free Download Narrative And The Making Of US National Security By Ronald R. Krebs
2015 | 413 Pages | ISBN: 1107103959 | PDF | 3 MB
Dominant narratives – from the Cold War consensus to the War on Terror – have often served as the foundation for debates over national security. Weaving current challenges, past failures and triumphs, and potential futures into a coherent tale, with well-defined characters and Description lines, these narratives impart meaning to global events, define the boundaries of legitimate politics, and thereby shape national security policy. However, we know little about why or how such narratives rise and fall. Drawing on insights from diverse fields, Narrative and the Making of US National Security offers novel arguments about where these dominant narratives come from, how they become dominant, and when they collapse. It evaluates these arguments carefully against evidence drawn from US debates over national security from the 1930s to the 2000s, and shows how these narrative dynamics have shaped the policies pursued by the United States.

Narrative Prosthesis Disability and the Dependencies of Discourse

Free Download Sharon L. Snyder, "Narrative Prosthesis: Disability and the Dependencies of Discourse"
English | 2001 | pages: 230 | ISBN: 0472067486, 0472097482 | PDF | 1,2 mb
Narrative Prosthesis: Disability and the Dependencies of Discourse develops a narrative theory of the pervasive use of disability as a device of characterization in literature and film. It argues that, while other marginalized identities have suffered cultural exclusion due to a dearth of images reflecting their experience, the marginality of disabled people has occurred in the midst of the perpetual circulation of images of disability in print and visual media. The manuscript’s six chapters offer comparative readings of key texts in the history of disability representation, including the tin soldier and lame Oedipus, Montaigne’s "infinities of forms" and Nietzsche’s "higher men," the performance history of Shakespeare’s Richard III, Melville’s Captain Ahab, the small town grotesques of Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio and Katherine Dunn’s self-induced freaks in Geek Love.David T. The gift of narrative in medieval England

Free Download Nicholas Perkins, "The gift of narrative in medieval England "
English | ISBN: 152613991X | 2021 | 288 pages | PDF | 5 MB
This invigorating study places medieval romance narrative in dialogue with theories and practices of gift and exchange, opening new approaches to questions of storytelling, agency, gender and materiality in some of the most engaging literature from the Middle Ages. It argues that the dynamics of the gift are powerfully at work in romances: through exchanges of objects and people; repeated patterns of love, loyalty and revenge; promises made or broken; and the complex effects that time works on such objects, exchanges and promises. Ranging from the twelfth century to the fifteenth, and including close discussions of poetry by Chaucer, the Gawain-Poet and romances in the Auchinleck Manuscript, this book will prompt new ideas and debate amongst students and scholars of medieval literature, as well as anyone curious about the pleasures that romance narratives bring.

The Space of Disappearance A Narrative Commons in the Ruins of Argentine State Terror

English | ISBN: 1438478518 | 2020 | 258 pages | EPUB, PDF | 2 MB + 3 MB
More than thirty thousand people were forcibly disappeared during the military dictatorship that governed Argentina from 1976 to 1983, leaving behind a cultural landscape fractured by absence, denial, impunity, and gaps in knowledge. This book is about how these absences assume narrative form in late twentieth-century Argentine fiction and the formal strategies and structures authors have crafted to respond to the country’s use of systematic disappearance as a mechanism of state terror. In incisive close readings of texts by Rodolfo Walsh, Julio Cortázar, and Tomás Eloy Martínez, Karen Elizabeth Bishop explores how techniques of dissimulation, doubling, displacement, suspension, and embodiment come to serve both epistemological and ethical functions, grounding new forms of historical knowledge and a new narrative commons whose work continues into the twenty-first century. Their writing, Bishop argues, recalibrates our understanding of the rich and increasingly urgent reciprocities between fiction, history, and the demands of human rights. In the end,

Myth, Religion, Tradition and Narrative in Late Antique Greek Poetry

Free Download Nicole Kroll, "Myth, Religion, Tradition and Narrative in Late Antique Greek Poetry "
English | ISBN: 3700185847 | 2020 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The volume shows the manifold themes of Greek poetry in Late Antiquity. Pagan and Christian concepts merge in the works of Nonnus of Panopolis and in the Ekphrasis of John of Gaza, the poems of George of Pisidia are read against the background of late antique philosophy and the autobiographies of Gregory of Nazianzus as literary forms of expression. The ekphrastic narrative techniques of Quintus Smyrnaeus and the composition of characters in Colluthus are analyzed, and Lycophron is proved as another source of Nonnus’ Dionysiaka. The contributions also deal with mythological characters, cyclopes and elephants, and late antique epigrammatic poetry is contextualized in the cultural and literary environment of the time.
