The Royal Navy in World War II

Naval Institute Press | 1997 | ISBN: 1557507120 | English | 184 pages | PDF | 114.69 MB
When Nazi Germany struck out from its borders in 1939, the force and efficiency of its land and air forces cut an unstoppable swath through mainland Europe. Only at sea was their new-found might tamed. Afraid to confront the British fleet in battle Hitler kept his most lethal ships hidden, although the Kriegsmarine’s superior ships and guns probably would have won a confrontation. This is the story of how, despite all odds, the Royal Navy helped Britain survive during the critical times of the Battle of the Atlantic, the Siege of Malta, the convoys to northern Russia, and the D-Day landings. It credits the dogged determination of British seafarers in the early part of the war for causing the demise of the German big-ship fleet, leaving the U-boat and E-boat to fight Hitler’s war at sea. The book also explains why the British could not play the part they wished in the Eastern and Pacific war. Heavily illustrated with more than 170 authentic wartime action photographs, this book captures Britain’s proud tradition as one of the world’s greatest seafaring nations, and it offers a wealth of information to all students of World War II history.

The Royal Navy in Old Photographs

Free Download Wilfrid Pym Trotter – The Royal Navy in Old Photographs
J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. | 1975 | ISBN: 0460041320 | English | 184 pages | PDF | 142.31 MB
A simply wonderful cornucopia of images to disappear into, dating from the 1840s to just prior to the first world war. The captions are great and the photographs themselves are mostly of extraordinary quality given the time they were taken. More than anything however, the breadth of subjects captured makes this book stand apart from many picture books about the Royal Navy, and the sailors and officers themselves are often the focus, though rarely posed in pristine uniforms, but rather shown at their work.

The Navy in Puget Sound (Images of America)

Free Download Cory Graff – The Navy in Puget Sound (Images of America)
Arcadia Publishing | 2010 | ISBN: 0738580813 | English | 132 pages | PDF | 103.3 MB
Even before settlers came to the Puget Sound, the U.S. Navy was exploring the sheltered inlets and deep water ports of what was dubbed "America’s Mediterranean." In 1856, the sailors of the navy warship Decatur repelled an attack by Native Americans, saving a tiny village on the shores of Elliott Bay named Seattle. In the ensuing years, Puget Sound became the West Coast’s premier port of call for the navy’s vessels and aircraft operating in the vast Pacific Ocean. During World War II, the region turned out a long line of combat and support vessels while quickly repairing many other ships that had been horribly damaged in clashes with the Japanese. In both peace and war, the communities of Puget Sound and the U.S. Navy have shared an enduring partnership that remains today.

Sailing Warships of the US Navy

Free Download Donald L. Canney – Sailing Warships of the US Navy
Chatham Publishing | 2001 | ISBN: 1861761104 | English | 236 pages | PDF | 166.48 MB
Although the U.S. Navy was a relatively small force during the Age of Sail, the radical thinking and innovative design of its warships impressed larger maritime powers. Until now, however, information about these ships has come from the works of Howard Chapelle, a practical naval architect and amateur historian whose drawings were impeccable but whose information was often inadequately documented. This large-format volume by an American ship authority is the first to look critically at Chapelle’s findings and compare them with rare original drafts, many published here for the first time, contemporary paintings, prints, and important documents such as the building specifications for the USS Constitution . The main chapters are devoted to the major ship types, from ships of the line to brigs and schooners, as well as vessels of the Great Lakes. More than 125 half-tones, plans, and drawings accompany the text. Appendixes deal with gunboats, galleys, and revenue cutters. This fresh perspective on the American sailing Navy is a must for any Age-of-Sail bookshelf.
