Homeostatic Role of the Parasympathetic Nervous System in Human Behavior

It was recently proposed that respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reflects the ability of the organism to integrate behavioural and metabolic demands, improving its homeostasis efficiency. Since the various anatomical and functional levels of the vagus nerve provide the conceptual basis of this allostatic model, it was designed under the name of the polyvagal theory. Therefore, altered RSA responses to various challenges could help to detect some dysfunctional states. The putative homeostatic roles of this vagal loop i.e., afferent and efferent pathways are reviewed here, in the domain of various psychological and behavioural homeostasis. Evaluation of the autonomic activity was issued from the temporal and frequency domain analyses of heart rate variability (HRV). For the purpose of preventing over-training, a heuristic sequential psychological and sympathovagal evolution is proposed, called the multistage psycho-autonomic model of adaptation to training (MPAMAT).

Neural Interface with the Peripheral Nervous System

Free Download Neural Interface with the Peripheral Nervous System: Stimulation, Recording, and Modelling
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9814877379 | 603 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 92 MB
Neural interfacing represents a riveting journey of scientific curiosity, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of solutions to some of the most complex challenges in neurology and bioengineering. Over the past two decades, pioneering studies have significantly propelled the field forward, particularly in the realm of peripheral nerves. These groundbreaking works have transformed our understanding of how to connect with the nervous system, allowing researchers and clinicians to uncover new therapeutic possibilities. Exploring peripheral nerve recording selectivity alongside multiple-contact nerve electrodes has brought unprecedented precision, enabling targeted treatments that minimize side effects and hold immense potential for both therapeutic interventions and diagnostics. The efforts continue to refine these technologies with the aim to reduce the mechanical and biological footprint of electrodes within the nervous system, and the ultimate vision is to develop neural interfaces that seamlessly integrate with both peripheral and central nervous systems for several years, enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by neurological conditions.

The Nervous System, Third Edition

Free Download The Nervous System, Third Edition by F Evans-Martin
English | January 1, 2022 | ISBN: 8887253749 | 216 pages | EPUB | 5.96 Mb
The nervous system allows us to move, feel, and think, and it is involved in nearly all of the functions of the human body. Nerves communicate signals between the brain and muscles, allowing us to move our hands and feet. Or, they relay messages about the environment through touch, taste, sight, and smell. Nerves can also communicate information about how we are feeling at any particular time and help to maintain homeostasis, or a stable state of equilibrium. The Nervous System, Third Edition discusses the development and organization of this diverse system, its functions, and potential injuries and complications. Packed with full-color photographs and illustrations, this absorbing book provides students with sufficient background information through references, websites, and a bibliography.
