The Blood-Brain Barrier New Research

Free Download Pedro A. Montenegro, "The Blood-Brain Barrier: New Research "
English | ISBN: 1621007669 | 2012 | 332 pages | PDF | 7 MB
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a highly regulated system that maintains brain allostasis. BBB achieves its main function by transporting blood to brain glucose, amino acids and other molecules needed for proper neural physiology, while extruding from the brain molecules derived from neural and glial metabolism that may have neurotoxic properties. In this book, the authors present topical research in the study of blood-brain barriers including their local and temporal regulation during normal and altered physiological states; the therapeutic opportunities of efflux-transporters at the blood-brain barrier; novel strategies to restore blood-brain barrier integrity after brain injury; evaluation of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier in neurological diseases and blood-brain barrier in hepatic encephalopathy

Suffrage and Its Limits The New York Story

Free Download Kathleen M Dowley, "Suffrage and Its Limits: The New York Story"
English | ISBN: 1438479697 | 2020 | 177 pages | EPUB | 1281 KB
Suffrage and Its Limits offers a unique interdisciplinary overview of the legacy and limits of suffrage for the women of New York State. It commemorates the state suffrage centennial of 2017, yet arrives in time to contribute to celebrations around the national centennial of 2020. Bringing together scholars with a wide variety of research specialties, it initiates a timely dialogue that links an appreciation of accomplishments to a clearer understanding of present problems and an agenda for future progress. The first three chapters explore the state suffrage movement, the 1917 victory, and what New York women did with the vote. The next three chapters focus on the status of women and politics in New York today. The final three chapters take a prospective look at the limits of liberal feminism and its unfinished agenda for women’s equality in New York. A preface by Lieutenant Governor Katherine Hochul and a final chapter by activist Barbara Smith bookend the discussion. Combining diverse approaches and analyses, this collection enables readers to make connections between history, political science, public policy, sociology, philosophy, and activism. This study moves beyond merely celebrating the centennial to tackle women’s issues of today and tomorrow.

Psychology of Gambling New Research

Free Download Andrea Eugenio Cavanna, "Psychology of Gambling: New Research "
English | ISBN: 1621005038 | 2012 | 210 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Generally considered a social and/or recreational activity, in some cases gambling can become an addictive behavior. Pathological gambling is classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as an impulse control disorder, characterized by failure to resist the impulse to gamble despite severe and devastating personal, family, or vocational consequences. The lifetime prevalence of pathological gambling in the adult population of North America has been estimated to be over 1%. Pathological gambling can also be associated with significantly specific behavioral problems and neuropsychiatric conditions, mainly affecting dopaminergic reward pathways. This book provides a 360-degree overview on the current psychological models for gambling behaviors, informed by both neurobiological and clinical observations.

Post-Pandemic Asia A New Normal for Regional Security

Free Download Axel Berkofsky, Giulia Sciorati, "Post-Pandemic Asia: A New Normal for Regional Security?"
English | 2021 | ASIN: B08XXYCSSH | EPUB | pages: 109 | 0.9 mb
In 2020, the way we define "insecurity" has drastically changed. Insecurity can now also be invisible and all around us, in the shape of a virus that disrupts people’s lives, upends the economy, subverts the core functions of national governments and jeopardises the foundations of international cooperation. At the same time, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has not made traditional security challenges disappear, especially in and around Asia. This Report presents short- and long-term scenarios for each of the hotspots that challenge peace and stability in Asia, a region that, after the pandemic, has become even more crucial for a swift global recovery.

Pathology New Research

Free Download Julie M. Vultagione, "Pathology: New Research "
English | ISBN: 1621006980 | 2012 | 107 pages | PDF | 5 MB
General pathology is a broad and complex scientific field which seeks to understand the mechanisms of injury to cells and tissues, as well as the body’s means of responding to and repairing injury. Areas of study include cellular adaptation to injury, necrosis, inflammation, wound healing, and neoplasia. The foundation of pathology is the application of this knowledge to diagnose diseases in humans and animals. In this book, the authors present topical research in the study of pathology, including challenging the authority of the autopsy in coronial investigations; pathological examination of influenza virus-associated and auto-immune encephalitis/encephalopathy in children; histopathological investigation in forensic autopsies; psychopathology of suicide in Bali and the pathology of fatty acid oxidation disorders on sudden unexpected death in infancy.
