Origins of North Korea’s Juche Colonialism, War, and Development

Free Download Jae-Jung Suh, "Origins of North Korea’s Juche: Colonialism, War, and Development"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0739197266, 0739176587 | PDF | pages: 188 | 1.9 mb
For over five decades, North Korea has outlived many forecasts of collapse despite defects in its system. Origins of North Korea’s Juche: Colonialism, War, and Development, edited by Jae-Jung Suh, argues that it has survived because of Juche, a unique political institution built on the simple notion of self-determination, whose meanings and limits have been shaped by Koreans’ experiences with colonialism, war, and development amidst surrounding superpowers that have complicated their aspirations and plans. The authors in this volume collectively provide an historical institutionalist account of North Korean politics organized around the concept of Juche-commonly translated as self-reliance, but best understood as subjecthood or being a master of one’s own fate-focusing on its role as a response to North Korea’s experiences with colonialism, the Korean War, and economic development. The contributors further discuss how Juche circumscribes the evolutionary path that North Koreans can take as they negotiate contemporary challenges. North Korea, as it is now, is best understood in terms of Juche which embodies the cumulative effect of its historical experiences and responses, and its future potential and trajectory, as enabled and constrained by its conception of Juche. This collection provides fascinating insights into the politics and history of one of the world’s most mysterious nations.

Free Download Carol Lomicky, Chuck Salestrom, "North Platte’s Keith Blackledge: Lessons from a Community Journalist"
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1467148040 | EPUB | pages: 160 | 3.7 mb
Popular culture glorified newspapers in the 1970s, creating a kind of mythical community newspaperman-like Keith Blackledge, longtime editor of the North Platte Telegraph. In his editorials and columns he praised, scolded, cajoled, teased and encouraged readers. He provided a civic connection while, mostly behind the scenes, he worked to make the town better. Blackledge’s story resonates today because it’s also about the evolution of newspapers. The editor’s career spanned a time when the industry was hit by a tsunami of change, including shrinking circulations and advertising revenues, and new technologies altering forever the way news is produced and consumed. Author Carol Lomicky chronicles the life of this remarkable newspaperman.

English | 2017 | ISBN: 1540225704, 1467136646 | EPUB | pages: 162 | 3.5 mb
North Alabama built its fi rst commercial brewery in Huntsville in 1819, three months before the state joined the Union. Before Prohibition in 1915, the region was peppered with numerous saloons, taverns and dance halls. Locals still found ways to get their booze during Prohibition using Tennessee River steamboats and secret tunnels for smuggling. Alabama re-legalized beer in 1937, but it wasn’t until 2004, when the grass-roots organization Free the Hops took on the state’s harsh beer laws, that the craft beer scene really began to flourish. Authors Sarah BĂ©langer and Kamara Bowling Davis trace the history of beer in North Alabama from the early saloon days to the craft beer explosion.
