When I encountered the idea of chaotic behavior in deterministic dynami cal systems, it gave me both great pause and great relief. The origin of the great relief was work I had done earlier on renormalization group properties of homogeneous, isotropic fluid turbulence. At the time I worked on that, it was customary to ascribe the apparently stochastic nature of turbulent flows to some kind of stochastic driving of the fluid at large scales. It was simply not imagined that with purely deterministic driving the fluid could be turbulent from its own chaotic motion. I recall a colleague remarking that there was something fundamentally unsettling about requiring a fluid to be driven stochastically to have even the semblance of complex motion in the velocity and pressure fields. I certainly agreed with him, but neither of us were able to provide any other reasonable suggestion for the observed, apparently stochastic motions of the turbulent fluid. So it was with relief that chaos in nonlinear systems, namely, complex evolution, indistinguish able from stochastic motions using standard tools such as Fourier analysis, appeared in my bag of physics notions. It enabled me to have a physi cally reasonable conceptual framework in which to expect deterministic, yet stochastic looking, motions. The great pause came from not knowing what to make of chaos in non linear systems.

Galileo Observed Science and the Politics of Belief

For centuries historians, scientists, journalists, and playwrights have speculated—sometimes wildly—about Galileo’s infamous encounter with the Roman Catholic Church. In their compelling critique of these efforts, Shea and Artigas draw on old and new evidence to try to set the record straight, regardless of whose toes they might be stepping on.

A Short History of Falling Everything I Observed About Love Whilst Dying

English | September 05, 2019 | ISBN: B07RY3RKSR | 5 hours and 26 minutes | M4B 128 Kbps | 326 Mb
As I get weaker, less a part of this world, or less a part of what I love, less a part of my family’s life, I can perceive its edges with fantastic clarity. I can lie against it, lolling my arm over the edge, running my fingers around the rim. And this is where I am.
In 2018, Joe Hammond wrote a piece for the Guardian about the 33 birthday cards he was writing for his two sons. It was shared by thousands. In A Short History of Falling, he tells the story behind that piece, about the experience of living with – and dying of – motor neurone disease (ALS).
A Short History of Falling is not a lament. It is a deeply imaginative meditation on what it feels like to confront the fact that your family will persist through time without you. It’s a book about love and about fatherhood. But it’s also an extraordinary kind of travel writing: an unblinking account of a journey into the unlighted territory and of what it means to lose your body and your connections to the world one by one.

Free Download James Hoare, "East Asia Observed: Selected Writings 1973-2021 "
English | ISBN: 9048560012 | 2023 | 420 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This collection brings together themes in East Asian history, diplomacy, culture and politics written by J.E. Hoare since the early 1970s. His writings derive from his training as a historian, from his time as a Research Analyst in the British Foreign Office from 1969-2003, and from his experiences as a diplomat in the Republic of Korea (South Korea), the People’s Republic of China, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). The writings selected for this volume include academic papers, book reviews and some quasi-journalistic articles which reflect both historical research and analysis of current events and issues. The wide-ranging content speaks to the author’s specialist fields of interest including diplomacy, biography, extraterritoriality and architecture on which he has published extensively.
