Violent Offenders Appraising and Managing Risk

Free Download Dr. Grant T. Harris PhD, "Violent Offenders: Appraising and Managing Risk "
English | ISBN: 1433819015 | 2015 | 470 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Predicting future violence among criminal offenders is notoriously difficult. In the previous editions of this popular book, the authors argued that community risk management is best done with actuarial assessment. Combining what is known about violence prediction, clinical decision making, and the literature on treatment outcome and program evaluation, they introduced and chronicled the development of their landmark assessment instruments, the Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG) and Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide. These have become go-to resources for forensic psychologists in the trenches today.

The Assessment and Treatment of Women Offenders An Integrative Perspective

Free Download The Assessment and Treatment of Women Offenders: An Integrative Perspective By Kelley Blanchette, Shelley L. Brown(auth.)
2006 | 189 Pages | ISBN: 0470864613 | PDF | 2 MB
There is a large body of research that provides guidance for those working with offenders on how they should be treated once they are in the correctional system. The problem is that most, if not all this research has been conducted on all male populations and it is assumed that women offenders are the same. However, women have different needs and support systems than men in some areas of their lives and it is unclear whether all research based on men can be generalized in this way. The book provides a review of the research literature to guide evidence-based practice in the assessment and treatment of adult female offenders. An historical overview of women’s crime and imprisonment will be followed by a global review of various theories of female criminality. The remainder of the book reviews the psychology of criminal conduct, with a specific focus on three psychological principles of effective intervention: risk, need and responsivity. Respectively, these principles set the "who", "what" and "how" for correctional intervention.Content: Chapter 1 The Extent and Nature of Female Offending and Incarceration Patterns (pages 1-14): Chapter 2 Theories of Female Offending (pages 15-40): Chapter 3 Assessment for Classification of Women Offenders (pages 41-52): Chapter 4 Assessing Women’s Risk (pages 53-82): Chapter 5 Assessing Women’s Needs (pages 83-113): Chapter 6 Responsivity, Treatment and Women Offenders (pages 115-136): Chapter 7 Conclusion (pages 138-147):

Effective Interventions in the Lives of Criminal Offenders

Free Download Effective Interventions in the Lives of Criminal Offenders By Byron R. Johnson Ph.D. (auth.), John A. Humphrey, Peter Cordella (eds.)
2014 | 149 Pages | ISBN: 1461489296 | PDF | 2 MB
This book provides the most current thinking on effective interventions in the lives of criminal offenders. Original articles by leading criminologists provide in-depth analyses of "turning points" in the desistance process experienced by criminal offenders. An understanding of the sources of turning points (or interventions) across the life course is vital to assessing their impact on criminal behavior. Three sources of interventions in criminal careers are identified in the literature: structural location, human agency and situated choice. Structural location refers to the social place occupied by an individual in the social structure: including marital and occupational status, education and income, and so on. Human agency means the active will of an individual to change his or her behavior, that is, the decision to stop engaging in criminal activities. In addition, situated choice coordinates the offender’s willingness to end a life of crime with the social structural supports that increase the odds of criminal desistance. This comprehensive book considers all three sources of turning points-structural location, human agency, and situated choice-across the life course of criminal offenders. The book also provides a section on cross-cultural perspectives on the effectiveness of interventions in the careers of criminal offenders. The policy implications of each intervention are considered in individual chapters. In addition, the authors suggest a research agenda to further the understanding of the interplay among the key interventions across the life course. This book will be of interest to researchers studying criminology from a life course perspective, as well as crime prevention, and public policy.
