In 2020, the way we define "insecurity" has drastically changed. Insecurity can now also be invisible and all around us, in the shape of a virus that disrupts people’s lives, upends the economy, subverts the core functions of national governments and jeopardises the foundations of international cooperation. At the same time, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has not made traditional security challenges disappear, especially in and around Asia. This Report presents short- and long-term scenarios for each of the hotspots that challenge peace and stability in Asia, a region that, after the pandemic, has become even more crucial for a swift global recovery.

English | ISBN: 1350359564 | 2024 | 234 pages | PDF | 7 MB
Focusing on the discursive dimension of the COVID-19 pandemic from a semiotic perspective, this book uses semiotic theory and methods to analyse the meaning-making mechanisms and dynamics that occurred during, and revolved around, the pandemic. Demonstrating the utility of semiotic theory, concepts and analytical methods to make sense of discursive phenomena like those triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the book explores in detail: · the blame-attribution discourses that emerged at the beginning of the pandemic; · how the coronavirus was brought to life in plastic and visual manifestations as a monster that poses a threat to humans; · how the collective actor ‘the healthcare workers’ was constructed in discourse and axiologised in positive terms; · the semiotics of the body during the pandemic, with a focus on the face, facemasks, social distancing and the uses of the body in online environments; · the idea of a ‘new’ normality following the pandemic. The book examines different dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic, including examples from Europe, Latin America and the United States and a wide range of images, texts, practices and objects, in order to highlight the importance of its discursive and semiotic nature.

Free Download David Gordon, "The American Cardiovascular Pandemic: A 100-Year History "
English | ISBN: 1476685126 | 2021 | 257 pages | PDF | 13 MB
As Americans and citizens of other industrializing countries began to enjoy lives of increasing affluence and ease during the first half of the 20th century, a rising tide of heart attacks and strokes displaced infectious diseases as the leading cause of death, killing millions in the United States and throughout the world. Although cardiovascular disease remains serious and widespread, the significant decline of per capita deaths is one of the greatest accomplishments of modern public health and medicine. Death rates from heart attack and stroke have fallen dramatically by 80% in the past 50 years – the progress has been hard won by a combination of basic and applied laboratory research, broad and far-reaching epidemiological studies by physicians, scientists, and public health experts. Cardiovascular disease is no longer viewed as an as an inevitable feature of the natural course of aging, and complacency has given way to hope. This book focuses on developments that influenced the rise and decline of cardiovascular mortality since 1900, but also includes insider insights from the author, a 42-year NIH employee.

Free Download Lindsay Shaw Taylor, "The Overfat Pandemic: Exposing the Problem and Its Simple Solution for Everyone Who Needs to Eliminate Excess Body Fat"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1510729542 | EPUB | pages: 200 | 0.3 mb
Research demonstrates that up to 76 percent of the world’s population-or 5.5 billion people-are overfat, defined as having sufficient excess body fat to impair health. This includes nearly 90 percent of Americans-one of the highest percentages worldwide. In The Overfat Pandemic, Dr. Philip Maffetone reveals common misconceptions regarding the real meaning of "overfat," factors that helped cause this global pandemic, and ways individuals can remedy the situation with the proper food and exercise. Other major points in the book include: * The distinction between "overweight" and "overfat" * How normal-weight people can be overfat * Why those who exercise can still be overfat, including athletes * Why waist measurement is better than the bathroom scale * How individuals can take charge of their body fat * How the overfat pandemic can be remedied through simple lifestyle changes and without diets As little as 14 percent of the world’s population has a normal body-fat percentage, and that number may be shrinking. This book aims to curtail the overfat epidemic by exposing a decades-long problem and offering a research-based, practical solution to help prevent and treat it.

Between January 1919 and March 1920, waves of Spanish flu swept across Australia, touching every settlement from the bottom of Tasmania to the tip of Cape York and from Byron Bay in the east to Broome in the west. At least 15,000 people died and many more were incapacitated, but medical and health specialists, by literally putting their lives on the line, saved countless more and gave Australia a template for what was to come at the country exactly a century later. This book tells the full story of the Australian experience of the Spanish Flu and of those who fought it and sometimes lost their lives to it. This fascinating account also illustrates many striking parallels to the Covid pandemic of 2020, including intense interstate rivalries, personal heroics, frequent confusion and incompetence, and widespread economic disruption.

English | 2020 | ISBN: 8855263897 | EPUB | pages: 114 | 0.7 mb
The Mediterranean region has faced a significant number of challenges that have stemmed from turbulent events taking place on its Southern shores: conflicts and instability, the migration crisis, disruptions of regional value chains, souring regional relations, and foreign power interferences that have severely affected the region. The Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the Southern Mediterranean, but the health crisis had ambiguous effects on the underlying economic, social, and political trends of the region. It has exposed and exacerbated much of the previous sources of tension and, obscured many of them as public attention moved towards facing the public health emergency. Will the Covid-19 pandemic spur governments and civil societies to action? Or will it just serve as another smokescreen behind which to hide the region’s longstanding problems?
