Using the lens of early modern social authorship and contemporary social media, this Element explores a new print genre popular in England at the end of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the periodical. Traditionally, literary history has focused on only one aspect, the periodical essay. This Element returns the periodical to its original, complex literary ecosystem as an ephemeral text competing for an emerging audience, growing out of a social authorship culture. It argues that the relationship between authors, ✅Publishers, and audiences in the early periodicals is a dynamic participatory culture, similar to what modern readers encounter in the early phases of the transition from print to digital, as seen in social media. Like our current evolving digital environment, the periodical also experienced a shift from its original practices stressing sociability to a more commercially driven media ecology. This is the first study to explore the connections between the development of travel and the rapid expansion of the periodicals market in the second half of the nineteenth century in Britain. By the 1860s, travel articles had become a staple of the periodicals market and reached readers who might never have travelled far themselves or bought a travel book. This monograph demonstrates that the representation of travel in Victorian periodicals came in forms and with cultural functions that differed from book publication, and that this media-specific representation helped to inscribe travel into the Victorian lifeworld. Based on a corpus of several general-interest periodicals targeted at different audiences, this book investigates how different readers – the family, women, young people and the working classes – engaged with travel. It argues that travel articles in periodicals performed significant cultural work because they accommodated readers to travel.

Longa provides a glimpse into the doctrines of these publications.This volume highlights the articles, reports, manifestos, and creative works of anarchists and left libertarians who were dedicated to propagandizing against authoritarianism, sham democracy, wage and sex slavery, and race prejudice. In the survey are nearly 100 newspapers produced throughout North America. For each entry, the following information is provided: title, issues examined, subtitle, editor, publication information, including location and frequency of publication, contributors, features and subjects, preceding and succeeding titles and an OCLC number to facilitate the identification of owning libraries via a WorldCat search. Excerpts from a selection of articles are provided to convey both the ideological orientation and rhetorical style of each paper’s editors and contributors. Finally, special attention is given to highlighting the scope of anarchist involvement in combating obscenity and labor laws that abridged the right to freely circulate reform papers through the mails, speak on street corners, and assemble in union halls.
