The control of optical modes in microcavities or in photonic bandgap (PBG) materials is coming of age! Although these ideas could have been developed some time ago, it is only recently that they have emerged, due to advances in both atomic physics and in fabrication techniques, be it on the high-quality dielectric mirrors required for high-finesse Fabry Perot resonators or in semiconductor multilayer deposition methods. Initially the principles of quantum electro-dynamics (QED) were demonstrated in elegant atomic physics experiments. Now solid-state implementations are being investigated, with several subtle differences from the atomic case such as those due to their continuum of electronic states or the near Boson nature of their elementary excitations, the exciton. Research into quantum optics brings us ever newer concepts with potential to improve system performance such as photon squeezing, quantum cryptography, reversible taps, photonic de Broglie waves and quantum computers. The possibility of implementing these ideas with solid-state systems gives us hope that some could indeed find their way to the market, demonstrating the continuing importance of basic research for applications, be it in a somewhat more focused way than in earlier times for funding.

English | March 27, 2024 | ISBN: 9819712904 | 127 pages | MOBI | 4.86 Mb
This book addresses an attempt to create Photonic Artificial Intelligence (PAI) system based on optical technologies, which process signals continuously. PAI could help to overcome digital computer limits and almost zero out the machine learning time and AI inference. It helps to consider feelings, the chaos of thoughts, cognitive activity, and the transcendental states of the human mind in AI systems. The book also discusses new problems such as synthesizing new photonic materials, creating optical control systems, and connecting PAI systems with outside digital computers and holographic memory. The book is aimed at a wide range of readers, including postgraduates and researchers, interested in advanced AI by creating its new paradigm, which can help to overcome traps of traditional AI development.

Photonic Crystals Fabrication, Band Structure and Applications

Free Download Venla E. Laine, "Photonic Crystals: Fabrication, Band Structure and Applications "
English | ISBN: 1616689536 | 2011 | 305 pages | PDF | 16 MB
Photonic crystals are periodic optical nanostructures that are designed to affect the motion of photons in a similar way that periodicity of a semiconductor crystal affects the motion of electrons. Photonic crystals occur in nature and in various forms have been studied scientifically for the last 100 years. This book gathers and presents topical data in the field of photonic crystals including the phenomena in photonic crystals stipulating the presence of omnidirectional band gaps, i.e., overlapping of stop bands in all directions; the physics of photonic crystal couplers and their applications; photonic crystals and their capability to control the propagation and emission of electromagnetic waves and others.

Photonics is a critically important technology. It complements maturing micro-electronics to create new directions that impacts a wide-ranging array of other industries. From a materials standpoint, this technology uses essentially all the classes of materials and seeks to hybridize them to create new devices. These proceedings showcase the transformation of photonics from a telecom-aligned technology to a much wider sphere of applications.Content:
