English | ISBN: 1608761207 | 2010 | 287 pages | PDF | 8 MB
The authors present the first monograph on electronic properties, lattice dynamics and phase transitions in TlX and TlMX2 (M = Ga, In; X = Se, S, Te) compounds. These chalcogenides belong to a family of the low-dimensional ?3?6 and A3B3C62 semiconductors possessing chain or layered structure. They are of significant interest because of highly anisotropic properties, semiconductor and photoconductor behaviour, non-linear effects in their current-voltage characteristics (including a region of negative differential resistance), switching and memory effects, second harmonic optical generation, ferroelectricity, relaxor behaviour and potential applications in optoelectronic devices. We review (i) crystal structure of the compounds, (ii) their transport properties under ambient conditions, (iii) experimental studies of the electronic structure, (iv) band structure calculations, (v) transport properties, semiconductor-metal phase transitions and band structure under high pressure, (vi) ferroelectric/structural phase transitions at ambient pressure, soft modes and incommensurate states, (vii) electronic nature of the ferroelectric phase transitions, (viii) lattice dynamics in ?3?6 and A3B3C62 crystals and their solid solutions, (ix) elastic properties and (x) recently discovered relaxor behaviour, nanodomains and quantum dots in doped and irradiated crystals. Physical properties of some related low-dimensional compounds are also discussed. New perspectives in studying and application of the aforementioned semiconductors are considered. The monograph is addressed to physicists, materials scientists, engineers and students who are interested in physics of the low-dimensional compounds, lattice dynamics, phase transitions and ferroelectricity.

Time Its Structure and Role in Physical Theories

Free Download Time: Its Structure and Role in Physical Theories by Peter Kroes
English | PDF | 1985 | 248 Pages | ISBN : 9027718946 | 28.1 MB
This book on the structure and role of time in physical theories addresses itself to scientists and philosophers intereste:’i in the ‘no man’s lard’ between science and philosophy, in particular between physics and philoso phy. The p:lint of departure is physical time, Le. time as usErl 1:¥ physicists in their theories; but the analysis is not oonfined to a purely physical level but caries the problem into the domain of philosophical in quiry. Altoough the book presupp:lses some knowledge of physics, I have avoided, wherever p:lssible, the use of advanced mathematics and technical details. Of all the people woo have been of help in writing this book, I w:>uld first of all like to mention Paul Scheurer and Guy Debrock who were my primary mentors in science and philosophy. This sttrly is a revision of my dissertation [Kroes 1982a] which I wrote under the stimulating guidance of Scheurer; many of the ideas ex posed here have their origin in his w:>rk and were developErl in frequent discussions with him. Guy Debrock not only stimulated my interest in philosophy but also made valuable suggestions. Witoout any overstatement, I dare say that without their assistence, this book w:>uld never have been written. Furthernore, I w:>uld like to thank D. Dieks, J.J.C.

Smart Grids as Cyber Physical Systems, 2 Volume Set

Free Download Smart Grids as Cyber Physical Systems, 2 Volume Set by O. V. Gnana Swathika, K. Karthikeyan, P. Sanjeevikumar
English | June 5, 2024 | ISBN: 1394261691 | 784 pages | MOBI | 15 Mb
Smart Grids as Cyber Physical Systems, a new two-volume set from Wiley-Scrivener, provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental security of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, offering clarity on specific operating and security issues that may arise that deteriorate the overall operation and efficiency of smart grid systems. It also provides techniques to monitor and protect systems, as well as aids for designing a threat-free system. This title discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) may be extensively deployed in the prediction of energy generation, electric grid-related line loss prediction, load forecasting, and for predicting equipment failure prevention. It also discusses power generation systems, building service systems, and explores advances in machine learning, artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, and hybrid mechanisms. Additionally, we will explore research contribution of experts in CPS infrastructure systems, incorporating sustainability by embedding computing and communication in day-to-day smart grid applications. This book will be of immense use to practitioners in industries focusing on adaptive configuration and optimization in smart grid systems. Through case studies, it offers a rigorous introduction to the theoretical foundations, techniques, and practical solutions CPS offers. Building CPS with effective communication, control, intelligence, and security is discussed from societal and research perspectives and a forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and achieve progress in CPS is provided by highlighting applications, advances, and research challenges. This book offers a comprehensive look at ICS cyber threats, attacks, metrics, risk, situational awareness, intrusion detection, and security testing, providing a valuable reference set for current system owners who wish to configure and operate their ICSs securely.
