English | PDF (True) | 2015 | 283 Pages | ISBN : 3319148508 | 14.3 MB
This biography provides a stimulating and coherent blend of scientific and personal narratives describing the many achievements of the theoretical physicist Herbert Fröhlich. For more than half a century, Fröhlich was an internationally renowned and much respected figure who exerted a decisive influence, often as a ‘man ahead of his time’, in fields as diverse as meson theory and biology. Although best known for his contributions to the theory of dielectrics and superconductivity, he worked in many other fields, his most important legacy being the pioneering introduction quantum field-theoretical methods into condensed matter physics in 1952, which revolutionised the subsequent development of the subject. Gerard Hyland has written an absorbing and informative account, in which Herbert Fröhlich’s magnetic personality shines through.

The World of Andrei Sakharov A Russian Physicist’s Path to Freedom

Free Download Antonina W. Bouis, "The World of Andrei Sakharov: A Russian Physicist’s Path to Freedom"
English | 2005 | pages: 406 | ISBN: 019515620X | PDF | 29,1 mb
How did Andrei Sakharov, a theoretical physicist and the acknowledged father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, become a human rights activist and the first Russian to win the Nobel Peace Prize? In his later years, Sakharov noted in his diary that he was "simply a man with an unusual fate." To understand this deceptively straightforward statement by an extraordinary man, The World of Andrei Sakharov, the first authoritative study of Andrei Sakharov as a scientist as well as a public figure, relies on previously inaccessible documents, recently declassified archives, and personal accounts by Sakharov’s friends and colleagues to examine the real context of Sakharov’s life.

Sociophysics A Physicist’s Modeling of Psycho-political Phenomena

Free Download Serge Galam, "Sociophysics: A Physicist’s Modeling of Psycho-political Phenomena "
English | ISBN: 1493950339 | 2012 | 462 pages | PDF | 14 MB
Do humans behave much like atoms? Sociophysics, which uses tools and concepts from the physics of disordered matter to describe some aspects of social and political behavior, answers in the affirmative. But advocating the use of models from the physical sciences to understand human behavior could be perceived as tantamount to dismissing the existence of human free will and also enabling those seeking manipulative skills . This thought-provoking book argues it is just the contrary.

Astrophysical Formulae A Compendium for the Physicist and Astrophysicist

Free Download Astrophysical Formulae: A Compendium for the Physicist and Astrophysicist by Kenneth R. Lang
English | PDF | 1974 | 757 Pages | ISBN : N/A | 57.7 MB
This book is meant to be a reference source for the fundamental formulae of astrophysics. Wherever possible, the original source of the material being pre sented is referenced, together with references to more recent modifications and applications. More accessible reprints and translations of the early papers are also referenced. In this way the reader is provided with the often ignored his torical context together with an orientation to the more recent literature. Any omission of a reference is, of course, not meant to reflect on the quality of its contents. In order to present a wide variety of concepts in one volume, a concise style is used and derivations are presented for only the simpler formulae. Ex tensive derivations and explanatory comments may be found in the original references or in the books listed in the selected bibliography which follows. Following the convention in astrophysics, the C. g. S. (centimeter-gram-second) system of units is used unless otherwise noted. To conserve space, the funda mental constants are not always defined, and unless otherwise noted the fol lowing symbols have the following meaning and value. Symbol Meaning Value 10 c Speed of light in vacuum 2. 997924562(11) x 10 cm S-l h=2nh Planck’s constant 6. 626196(50) x 10 – 27 erg s Rationalized Planck’s constant 1. 0545919(80) x 10- 27 erg s h=h/2n k Boltzmann’s constant 1. 380622(59) x 10 – 16 erg K – 1 4.
