Free Download Ken Garfield, "Billy Graham: A Life in Pictures"
English | ISBN: 157243581X | 2013 | 160 pages | PDF | 33 MB
Celebrating the life and legacy of one of America’s best-known religious figures in words and photographs, this book traces the amazing journey of the lanky farm boy from Charlotte, North Carolina, who grew up to preach to more than 200 million people in stadiums and arenas around the world. Written by a journalist who covered Graham and his ministry for more than a decade, Billy Graham: A Life in Pictures chronicles the preacher’s rise, his friendship with U.S. presidents, his spectacular crusades, and his work in building a religious organization that continues with his son Franklin as its leader. It also offers a glimpse into Graham’s rich family life and how he managed to maintain his integrity while other religious personalities, despite-or perhaps because of-their large followings, were losing theirs. The book provides a fitting tribute to one of the most important religious leaders of the 20th century, a man of unimpeachable character who influenced millions around the globe.

Funny Pictures Animation and Comedy in Studio-Era Hollywood

Free Download Funny Pictures: Animation and Comedy in Studio-Era Hollywood By Daniel Goldmark, Charlie Keil
2011 | 344 Pages | ISBN: 0520267230 | EPUB | 4 MB
This collection of essays explores the link between comedy and animation in studio-era cartoons, from filmdom’s earliest days through the twentieth century. Written by a who’s who of animation authorities, Funny Pictures offers a stimulating range of views on why animation became associated with comedy so early and so indelibly, and illustrates how animation and humor came together at a pivotal stage in the development of the motion picture industry. To examine some of the central assumptions about comedy and cartoons and to explore the key factors that promoted their fusion, the book analyzes many of the key filmic texts from the studio years that exemplify animated comedy. Funny Pictures also looks ahead to show how this vital American entertainment tradition still thrives today in works ranging from The Simpsons to the output of Pixar.

Fervid Filmmaking 66 Cult Pictures of Vision, Verve and No Self-Restraint

Free Download Fervid Filmmaking: 66 Cult Pictures of Vision, Verve and No Self-Restraint By Mike Watt
2013 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0786470666 | EPUB | 5 MB
For fervid or feverish film professionals and buffs, there is a term–"Kitchen Sink movies"–referring to films that take severe-angle turns at unexpected moments, where a filmmaker will borrow from across the artistic spectrum to create a wild, disorienting ride. They are what this book is about. Throwing marketing reports and box-office projections to the wind, the writer-director-producers conjure a whirl of ideas, of images, of themes or Descriptions, that inexplicably come together despite conventional reason. Almost always cult films, these movies rarely succeed in their first run. Indeed, some of the very best remain unknown to mainstream audiences. This volume provides in-depth examinations of 66 of these cultural oddities, from such disparate films as La Morte en direct, The Final Programme, and Head to lesser known independents like The Prodigy, Land of College Prophets, and Scrapbook. Putting these unusual films into a cultural context promotes an under appreciated but fascinating facet of movie-making.

The Literary Life of Pictures A Theory of Description

Free Download Michele Cometa, "The Literary Life of Pictures: A Theory of Description "
English | ISBN: 3031528964 | 2024 | 142 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book offers a theory of ekphrasis―the literary description of an artwork―from the perspective of Visual Culture studies. A theory of ekphrasis must take into account not only the rhetorical strategies articulated in the description of artworks, but also the complex interplay that holds together the pictures that are described, the gazes that rest on them, and the dispositives that mediate them. It is therefore a matter of linking the study of the verbal rhetoric with the dynamics that are established between the author, the reader, and the visual artworks, real or fictive, as well as the performative aspects of description and the mediascapes that, from time to time, condition the gaze and the visual experience of the authors and the readers. This book proposes thus to consider both the intradiegetic aspects of description and the extradiegetic ones that condition its verbal texture. Following the rhetorics of ekphrasis throughout the Western tradition, from its origins in Philostratus, its reappraisal by Johann Joachim Winckelmann, to the twentieth-century avant-garde, this book shows how ekphrastic techniques are historically determined by the relationship between pictures, gazes, and dispositives.
