Buddhism, Power and Political Order (Routledge Critical Studies in Buddhism)

Weber’s claim that Buddhism is an otherworldly religion is only partially true. Early sources indicate that the Buddha was sometimes diverted from supramundane interests to dwell on a variety of politically-related matters. The significance of Asoka Maurya as a paradigm for later traditions of Buddhist kingship is also well-attested. However, there has been little scholarly effort to integrate findings on the extent to which Buddhism interacted with the political order in the classical and modern states of Theravada Asia into a wider, comparative study. This volume brings together the brightest minds in the study of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. Their contributions create a more coherent account of the relations between Buddhism and political order in the late pre-modern and modern period by questioning the contested relationship between monastic and secular power. In doing so, they expand the very nature of what is known as the ‘Theravada’. Buddhism, Power and Political Order offers new insights for scholars of Buddhism, and it will stimulate new debates.

The debate about so-called economic globalization has reached a new phase. The hegemony of neo-liberal thinking has ended, in the face of both the increased and increasingly effective resistance to the social consequences of neo-liberal market-making – rising inequality and insecurity throughout the world – and the visibly dysfunctional effects of lack of regulation – currency and stock market crashes, among others. Thus, the story about ‘the rise and fall of market society’, which was first told in these terms by Karl Polanyi sixty years ago, is about to receive a new chapter.

Paris The Shaping of the French Capital A Political Perspective

English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032432543 | PDF | pages: 405 | 182.8 mb
This book offers a new perspective on French architecture, describing the impact of political history on the architectural development of Paris. Through various stages in history from the Roman to the Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern and Modern, Paris: The Shaping of the French Capital shows how the immense political power of monarchs, the aristocracy and church determined the pace and volume of building in Paris and the extent of town planning. Whereas many other great cities owe their historic importance to trade, and to local government (the City of London being a supreme example), these attributes were largely absent in Paris (throughout most of its history it didn’t even have a mayor). Arguably, because of this, gradually over the centuries the French capital emerged as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, and now is a metropolis with a population in excess of 2 million.
