As one surveys India’s political parlance, the first feature one notices is that while certain people and parties are described as Leftist, certain others are designated as Rightist. The second feature which invites attention is that these contradistinctive labels – Leftist and Rightist – have never been apportioned among people and parties concerned by an impartial tribunal like, say, the Election Commission. What has happened is that certain people and parties have appropriated one label – Leftist – for themselves, and reserved the other label – Rightist – for their opponents, without permission from or prior consultation with the latter. The third feature which one discovers very soon is that people and parties who call themselves Leftist, also claim to be progressive, revolutionary, socialist, secularist, and democratic. At the same time, they accuse the ‘Rightists’ of being reactionary, revivalist, capitalist, and fascist. The fourth feature of the Indian political scene needs a somewhat deeper look because it goes beyond the merely political and borders on the philosophical. The Leftists claim that they are committed to a scientific interpretation of the world-process including economic, social, political, and cultural developments, and that, therefore, their plans and programmes are not only pertinent but also profitable for the modern age. Simultaneously, they accuse that the ‘Rightists’ are addicted to an obscurantist view of the same world-process and, therefore, to such outmoded forms of economy, polity, and culture as are bound to be injurious at this stage of human history. One cannot help concluding that the dictionaries are not al all helpful in deciphering the Leftist language. The source of that language has to be sought elsewhere. There is no truth whatsoever in the Leftist claim that India’s prevailing political parlance took shape in the course of India’s fight for freedom against British imperialism.Table of Contents:-Chapter 1. When the Civil War began, the North and the South took different approaches to creating their armies. In the Union, General-in-Chief Winfield Scott decided to create what would be called the "U.S. Volunteers." Having experienced difficulties in the Mexican War with volunteers at all levels, Scott did not want to repeat the experience. He reasoned that the war would not last long and that an additional 25,000 men added to the regular army would suffice to do all the fighting. Volunteers could guard the rivers and facilities, but little else. The Confederacy, having benefited from the resignation from the army of hundreds of officers and men, created a unified army from whole cloth. President Jefferson Davis used his military background and experience to form an army almost entirely of volunteers. No formal distinction was made between "regulars" and "volunteers," although the several private military academies of the South, e.g. VMI, as well as West Point, supplied a well-trained military leadership. But West Pointers would be given all major commands. By the end of the war, over 3 million men wore the two uniforms, the Blue and the Grey. Hundreds of those men were general officers, men who had responsibility for commanding thousands of men in combat. The great generals on both sides, Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Lee, Longstreet, Johnston, are well known. They were all West Point graduates and professional soldiers. There were also many near-great generals who were not professional soldiers. They were the so-called "Political Generals." But few other than Joshua Chamberlain, Patrick Cleburne, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and John Logan are well-remembered. That is partly due to the fact that few non-West Pointers ever had major commands. Also, the stereotypical image of bumbling "Political Generals" remains strong in Civil War circles. This book will introduce (or re-introduce) the reader to 50 of these "Political Generals," men who did not graduate from West Point. I have chosen 25 from each side and given the reader an introduction to their achievements, successes, and failures. After reading my short essays and following up with the "further reading" I have included with each item, the reader can then make up his own mind about these men., Further, I hope and trust you the reader will gain a fuller understanding of the nature and abilities of the more aptly-named "Citizen-Generals" in the American Civil War.

In todays world, the issue of Cyprus is notable for all the wrong reasons: because of the duration of the divisions in Cyprus itself between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots (formalized since 1983 by a disputed international border across the island); because of the involvement of Greece and Turkey, for which the hyphenated Cypriot communities form proxy battalions; and because of the failure of the United Nations longstanding efforts to resolve the conflict. Much of the discussion in the book revolves around the difficulty of producing viable constitutional and civic arrangements in an ethnically-divided polity. It is clear that this issue dominates almost all discussions of the Cyprus Problem, from the drawing of internal borders, the conceptualization of identity of oneself and of the other, to the management of the natural resources with which the island is endowed. Containing chapters from both Turkish- and Greek-Cypriots, as well as outside scholars, the book covers four key themes, namely identity and perceptions; contemporary issues in the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities; comparisons with divided polities elsewhere; and new approaches to resolving the Cyprus Problem. One of the key messages from this book is that people-to-people initiatives must supplement the plans (and posturing) of politicians in order to make progress towards an ultimate resolution of the Cyprus Problem. The book shows that human ingenuity is able to find a widely accepted and workable formula for a Cyprus that combines unity and diversity, acknowledges the worth of its different constituent communities, and addresses or begins to move beyond historical animosities and injustices.
