Feminist Politics, Intersectionality and Knowledge Cultivation

Free Download Radhika Govinda, "Feminist Politics, Intersectionality and Knowledge Cultivation"
English | ISBN: 0367424274 | 2025 | 387 pages | EPUB, PDF | 922 KB + 3 MB
In Feminist Politics, Intersectionality and Knowledge Cultivation, Radhika Govinda engages with intersectionality – as critical theory, as critical methodology and as critical pedagogy – to make sense of feminist politics in India and beyond, and knowledge-making on feminist politics, as such. In doing so, she makes a case for theory-making, conducting empirical research and classroom teaching to be understood as integral parts of knowledge cultivation, each feeding into the other. Differently put, the book encapsulates Govinda’s engagement, spanning fifteen years and four case studies, exploring what insights an intersectional lens throws up, and how these insights complicate our understandings of marginality, privilege and solidarity in the field of women’s and gender studies, in feminist classrooms, in women’s and social movements, in particular NGO-led feminist activism, state-led development initiatives and digital feminist campaigns, and in everyday social relations in rural and urban spaces. Uncovering, interrogating and disrupting the politics of coloniality and feminist complicity is an important running thread in the book. Through a reflexive account of her own location and practice in the academy at the cusp of the global north and the global south, Govinda highlights the importance of being attentive to intersectional positionality and to the contextual specificities of engaging in feminist politics and knowledge-making in the age of global neoliberalism.

Contending Legitimacy in World Politics The State, Civil Society and the International Sphere in the Twenty-first Century

Free Download Bronwyn Winter, "Contending Legitimacy in World Politics: The State, Civil Society and the International Sphere in the Twenty-first Century"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0367889269 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 0.7 mb
Legitimacy, along with security and democracy, is arguably one of the most widely used global buzzwords of the new millennium. Yet, the idea of political legitimacy is not new and has been constructed in different ways at different moments in history. This book problematizes this notion, from various contextual standpoints, disciplinary and theoretical perspectives. Taking a comparative, transnational and bottom-up approach to the study of political legitimacy, this book sheds light on multiple perceptions by different actors (institutions, civil society, majoritarian and minority subjects), analysing the notion of political legitimacy from a critical perspective. Questioning received wisdom or one-size-fits-all analyses, it leads to a reassessment of the link between legitimacy and sovereignty, and emphasises the demand by transnational civil society to go beyond identity politics, which produce logics of violence. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Discourse.

The Democracy Makers Human Rights and the Politics of Global Order

Free Download Nicolas Guilhot, "The Democracy Makers: Human Rights and the Politics of Global Order"
English | 2005 | pages: 287 | ISBN: 0231131240 | PDF | 2,1 mb
Has the international movement for democracy and human rights gone from being a weapon against power to part of the arsenal of power itself? Nicolas Guilhot explores this question in his penetrating look at how the U.S. government, the World Bank, political scientists, NGOs, think tanks, and various international organizations have appropriated the movement for democracy and human rights to export neoliberal policies throughout the world. His work charts the various symbolic, ideological, and political meanings that have developed around human rights and democracy movements. Guilhot suggests that these shifting meanings reflect the transformation of a progressive, emancipatory movement into an industry, dominated by "experts," ensconced in positions of power.

Hubris The Troubling Science, Economics, and Politics of Climate Change

Free Download Michael Hart, "Hubris: The Troubling Science, Economics, and Politics of Climate Change"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 0994903804 | EPUB | pages: 614 | 3.8 mb
This book explores problems and issues that have emerged in national and international discussion of policies to address climate change. It concludes that every solution put forward by the UN and activists poses more problems than might ever emerge from the marginal human impact on natural climate change. Rather than mitigation, governments should focus on adaptation. As is, climate change discussions have become captive of a utopian agenda that is using climate change as a stalking horse to drive alarm in the hope that it will convince governments to act.

Conspiracy Theory in Turkey Politics and Protest in the Age of ‘Post-Truth’

Free Download Julian de Medeiros, "Conspiracy Theory in Turkey: Politics and Protest in the Age of ‘Post-Truth’"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 075560072X, 1788311671 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 0.5 mb
Turkey is witnessing an era of political upheaval. From the Gezi protests in 2013 to the attempted military coup of 2016, the concept of `post-truth’ plays a significant role in Turkish politics today. In the chaos of conspiracy theories, hidden enemies and post-coup purges, the unreal merges with the real, fuelling political repression and anti-government sentiment alike. Julian de Medeiros here analyses the many unfolding challenges of Erdogan’s New Turkey, and shows how a fixedly Turkish-style of `post-truth’ has taken root. Examining the relationship between conspiracy theory and `post-truth’, this book sheds light on the strategies of political paranoia that threaten to undermine the success of Turkey’s democratic model. De Medeiros argues that both the Gezi protests and the failed coup attempt need to be considered alongside the emerging anti-democratic and conspiratorial tendencies of an increasingly authoritarian Turkish government. As Turkish democracy continues to evolve with breath-taking speed and unpredictable outcomes, de Medeiros shows how the rise of paranoid politics in Turkey constitutes part of a global trend towards post-truth narratives. He situates Turkish democracy as subject to a global resurgence of strongman leadership and antagonistic populism. Conspiracy Theory in Turkey presents the very first critical account of the Turkish model of a `post-truth politics’. Through a counter-intuitive analysis of conspiracy theory and paranoid politics the book disentangles the real from the unreal and chronicles the emergence of post-truth in Turkey today.

Ideology and Strategy A Century of Swedish Politics

English | 2004 | pages: 360 | ISBN: 0521031443, 0521343305 | DJVU | 2,4 mb
This book empirically analyzes how a minority can succeed in having its way in a modern democracy. The author applies modern rational choice theory to examine such paradoxical triumphs in Swedish domestic politics over the past 100 years. Identifying Arrow’s paradox, Prisoner’s Dilemma, and other famous game-theoretic matrices, eight important issues in Swedish parliamentary history are explained: the tariff issue in the 1880s, the introduction of universal suffrage, the introduction of parliamentary government, the new economic politics during the 1930s, the debate on planned economies, the supplementary pensions issue, the nuclear power issue, and the wage earners’ fund issue. For each, the author presents the outcome and its history, and the strategic behavior of the actors.
