The Possibility of Literature The Novel and the Politics of Form

Free Download Peter Boxall, "The Possibility of Literature: The Novel and the Politics of Form"
English | ISBN: 1009314297 | 2024 | 408 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The Possibility of Literature is an essential collection from one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in contemporary literary studies. Bringing together key compositions from the last twenty-five years, as well as several new pieces, the book demonstrates the changing fate of literary thinking over the first decades of the twenty-first century. Peter Boxall traces here the profound shifts in the global conditions that make literature possible as these have occurred in the historical passage from 9/11 to Covid 19. Exploring questions such as ‘The Idea of Beauty’, the nature of ‘Mere Being’, or the possibilities of Rereading, the author anatomises the myriad forces that shape the literary imagination. At the same time, he gives vivid critical expression to the imaginative possibilities of literature itself – those unique forms of communal life that literature makes possible in a dramatically changing world, and that lead us towards a new shared future.

Toxic Torts Science, Law, and the Possibility of Justice Ed 2

Free Download Carl F. Cranor, "Toxic Torts: Science, Law, and the Possibility of Justice Ed 2"
English | ISBN: 1316606384 | 2017 | 429 pages | PDF | 2 MB
US tort law, cloaked behind increased judicial review of science, is changing before our eyes yet we cannot see it. While Supreme Court decisions have altered how courts review scientific testimony, the complexity of both science and legal procedures mask the resulting social consequences. Yet these consequences are too important to remain hidden. Mistaken court reviews of scientific evidence can decrease citizen access to the law, decrease incentives for firms to test their products, lower deterrence for harmful products, and decrease the possibility of justice for citizens injured by toxic substances. Even if courts review evidence well, increases in litigation costs and attorney screening of clients can impede access to the law. Newly revised and expanded, Toxic Torts, 2nd edition introduces these issues, reveals the relationships that can deny citizens just restitution for harms suffered, and shows how justice can be improved in toxic tort cases.

On Gender, from Science to the Possibility of Gender Politics

Free Download Ian Rory Owen, "On Gender, from Science to the Possibility of Gender Politics"
English | ISBN: 1036405834 | 2024 | 238 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The book provides the intellectual tools to understand the existential dimensions of what it is to be gendered. Classical phenomenology began qualitative studies, in a self-aware self-critical approach to qualitative appearances of being. This book applies the thought of Husserl and Heidegger and introduces Simone De Beauvoir’s analysis of the masculine-feminine balance of power. It understands conceptual meaning as referring to qualitative wholes, in a variety of settings. Simply put, the meaningful space of everyday life is one in which families, culture and society develop the next generation. This is also the space in which qualitative meaning exists. Understanding arises out of sensuality; one example is the way genders arise against the background of everyday social life: gendered expressions of roles and identities exist through identifying with the social type gender. Specifically, in relation to gender, it is argued that trouble cases and inter-gender boundary dynamics show aspects of gender roles.
