The Post-Colonial State and Civil War in Sudan The Origins of Conflict in Darfur

English | 2012 | ISBN: 178076085X | EPUB | pages: 280 | 0.6 mb
The humanitarian crisis in Darfur, a consequence of the civil war and ongoing violence, has attracted significant international media attention. Here, Noah Bassil offers a re-conception of the conflict in Darfur by examining the origins and progression of the conflict through the broader issue of state failure in post-colonial Sudan. By moving away from a ‘localized’ view of the conflict, Bassil is able to demonstrate the extent to which the breakdown of social relations in Darfur is interconnected with the wider breakdown of Sudanese and post-colonial societies, offering an examination of the nexus between international, national and local forces. Through its coherent framework for understanding the causes of the civil war that erupted in the Darfur region in 2003, this book provides a unique examination of the conflict and the wider post-colonial situation, making it an important contribution to the fields of History, International Relations and Peace Studies.

The Politics of Unsustainability Eco-Politics in the Post-Ecologist Era

Free Download Ingolfur Bluhdorn, Ian Welsh, "The Politics of Unsustainability: Eco-Politics in the Post-Ecologist Era"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0415466202 | EPUB | pages: 216 | 0.8 mb
Two decades after its launch by the UN Brundtland Commission, the paradigm of sustainability seems to have reached its limits. Whilst the concept figures more prominently in public debate and policy making than ever before, the ecological footprint of advanced liberal consumer societies continues to grow, and the forceful economic development of countries such as China and India reinforces concerns that the world is moving further away from, rather than closer towards the ideal of sustainability. Given the proven failure of ecological modernisation strategies to secure sustainability, the traditional question "How may our established lifestyles and socio-economic practices be made more sustainable?" needs to be supplemented by a second, equally important, question: "How do advanced modern consumer democracies try and manage to sustain what is known to be unsustainable?" Put differently, traditional research into the politics of sustainability needs to be supplemented by a new line of research into the politics of unsustainability. Exploring the recent transformation of eco-political discourses and a variety of ways in which the unfolding paradox of sustaining the unsustainable is being managed, the present volume pioneers this new research agenda.

Post-conflict Reconstruction and Local Government

English | 2020 | ISBN: 1032089172, 0367273292 | EPUB | pages: 188 | 1.0 mb
The subject of local government and post-conflict reconstruction sits at the intersection of several interrelated research areas, notably conflict/peacebuilding, governance, and political economy. This volume addresses a gap in the academic literature: whilst decentralisation is frequently included in peace agreements, the actual scope and role of local government is far less frequently discussed. This gap remains despite a considerable literature on local government in developing countries more generally, particularly with regard to decentralisation; but also, despite a considerable and growing literature on post-conflict reconstruction.

Post-colonial struggles for a democratic Southern Africa Legacies of Liberation

Free Download Carolyn Bassett, Marlea Clarke, "Post-colonial struggles for a democratic Southern Africa: Legacies of Liberation"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1138913448 | EPUB | pages: 130 | 0.5 mb
National liberation, one of the grand narratives of the twentieth century, has left a weighty legacy of unfulfilled dreams. This bookexplores the ongoing struggle for legitimate, accountable political leaders in postcolonial Southern Africa, focusing on dilemmas arising when ex-liberation movements form the governments. While the spread of multi-party democracy to most countries in the region is to be celebrated, democratic practice often has been superficial – a limited, elitist politics that relies on the symbols of the liberation struggle to legitimate de facto one-party rule and authoritarian practices. Using country cases from Tanzania, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia, the collection explores three subthemes relevant to postcolonial governance in Southern Africa: how the struggle for liberation shapes the character of political transformation, the nature of rule in one-party dominant states headed by former liberation movements, and the processes of governance and resistance in post-liberation contexts.

The sudden collapse of communism stimulated both the rapid emergence of fledgling democracies and scholarly attention to the post-communist transition. These newly democratized parliaments have been described as "parliaments in adolescence".

Post-Pandemic Asia A New Normal for Regional Security

English | 2021 | ASIN: B08XXYCSSH | EPUB | pages: 109 | 0.9 mb
In 2020, the way we define "insecurity" has drastically changed. Insecurity can now also be invisible and all around us, in the shape of a virus that disrupts people’s lives, upends the economy, subverts the core functions of national governments and jeopardises the foundations of international cooperation. At the same time, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has not made traditional security challenges disappear, especially in and around Asia. This Report presents short- and long-term scenarios for each of the hotspots that challenge peace and stability in Asia, a region that, after the pandemic, has become even more crucial for a swift global recovery.

Post-Conflict Tajikistan The politics of peacebuilding and the emergence of legitimate order

English | 2009 | ISBN: 0415484030 | EPUB | pages: 236 | 1.0 mb
Post-Soviet, post-conflict Tajikistan is an under-studied and poorly understood case in conflict studies literature. Since 2000, this Central Asian state has seen major political violence end, countrywide order emerge and the peace agreement between the parties of the 1990s civil war hold. Superficially, Tajikistan appears to be a case of successful international intervention for liberal peacebuilding, yet the Tajik peace is characterised by authoritarian governance.

At the end of the "founding" or initial decade, the new parliaments of post-Communist Europe had developed two distinct types: democratic and presidentially-dominated. Whilst in the early years, they had been characterised as "parliaments in adolescence," they have – through the second decade – continued to improvise but also elaborate their working relationships with both their chief executives and electorates.

Climate Change and Post-Political Communication Media, Emotion and Environmental Advocacy

Free Download Philip Hammond, "Climate Change and Post-Political Communication: Media, Emotion and Environmental Advocacy"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1138777501 | EPUB | pages: 150 | 0.9 mb
For many years, the objective of environmental campaigners was to push climate change on to the agenda of political leaders and to encourage media attention to the issue. By the first decade of the twenty-first century, it appeared that their efforts had been spectacularly successful. Yet just at the moment when the campaigners’ goals were being achieved, it seemed that the idea of getting the issue into mainstream discussion had been mistaken all along; that the consensus-building approach produced little or no meaningful action. That is the problem of climate change as a ‘post-political’ issue, which is the subject of this book.

The Search for Security in Post-Taliban Afghanistan

Free Download Cyrus Hodes, "The Search for Security in Post-Taliban Afghanistan "
English | ISBN: 1138452068 | 2017 | pages | EPUB | 1371 KB
By the middle of 2007, Afghans had become increasingly disillusioned with a state-building process that had failed to deliver the peace dividend that they were promised. For many Afghans, the most noticeable change in their lives since the fall of the Taliban has been an acute deterioration in security conditions. Whether it is predatory warlords, the Taliban-led insurgency, the burgeoning narcotics trade or general criminality, the threats to the security and stability of Afghanistan are manifold. The response to those threats, both in terms of the international military intervention and the donor-supported process to rebuild the security architecture of the Afghan state, known as security-sector reform (SSR), has been largely insufficient to address the task at hand. NATO has struggled to find the troops and equipment it requires to complete its Afghan mission and the SSR process, from its outset, has been severely under-resourced and poorly directed. Compounding these problems, rampant corruption and factionalism in the Afghan government, particularly in the security institutions, have served as major impediments to reform and a driver of insecurity.
