Denying Existence The Logic, Epistemology and Pragmatics of Negative Existentials and Fictional Discourse

Free Download Denying Existence: The Logic, Epistemology and Pragmatics of Negative Existentials and Fictional Discourse By Arindam Chakrabarti (auth.)
1997 | 260 Pages | ISBN: 9048147883 | PDF | 8 MB
This book tries to explore, in language as non-technical as possible, the deepest philosophical problems regarding the logical status of empty (singular) terms such as `Pegasus’, `Batman’, `The impossible staircase departs in Escher’s painting `Ascending-Descending’+ etc., and regarding sentences which deny the existence of singled-out fictional entities. It will be fascinating for literary theorists with a flair for logic, to students of metaphysics and philosophy of language, and for historians of philosophy interested in the fate of the Russell-Meinong debate. For teachers of these aspects of analytic philosophy this will provide a textbook which goes beyond the Western tradition (without plunging into any mystical Eastern `Emptiness’, which is what some previous comparative philosophers did!).

English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031425707 | 256 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 7 MB
This book describes the role of eye contact in human communication by investigating the relationship between the eye gaze and the development of language and pragmatic skills. The author reveals that although the need for eye contact is an innate human characteristic, neurodevelopmental disorders can have adverse outcomes and delays in language and pragmatic skills. A comparative approach compares childhood disorders that affect pragmatics in animal species that are phylogenetically related to humans with those species that are not. This text appeals to students and researchers working in pragmatics and the philosophy of language.

English | ISBN: 0415957206 | 2007 | 200 pages | EPUB, PDF | 1242 KB + 2 MB
This book approaches the topic of false friends from a theoretical perspective, arguing that false friends carry out a positive role as a cognitive device, mainly in literature and jokes, and suggesting some pragmatic strategies in order to restore the original sense of a text/utterance when a given translator (or a foreign speaker) falls victim to false friends. This theoretical account is successively verified by appealing to texts from the fields of literature, science, philosophy, journalism, and everyday speech.

The Socio-Cognitive Approach to Communication and Pragmatics

Free Download The Socio-Cognitive Approach to Communication and Pragmatics by Istvan Kecskes
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 336 Pages | ISBN : 3031301595 | 7.5 MB
The book aims to serve as a theoretical framework for the socio-cognitive approach (SCA) that is an alternative to the two main lines of pragmatics research: linguistic-philosophical pragmatics and sociocultural-interactional pragmatics. SCA broadens the scope of the field with an intent to incorporate not only L1 communication but also intercultural communication, and communication in a second language. The author integrates the pragmatic view of cooperation and the cognitive view of egocentrism and emphasizes that both cooperation and egocentrism are manifested in all phases of communication, albeit to varying extents. SCA places equal importance on the social and cognitive individual factors in pragmatics. The author claims that while (social) cooperation is an intention-directed practice that is governed by relevance, (individual) egocentrism is an attention-oriented trait dominated by salience.

The data were collected with an online survey that focused on the relationship between intercultural competence and pragmatics.
