Reading has arguably the longest and richest history of any domain for scientifically considering the impact of technology on the user. From the 1920s to the 1950s, Miles Tinker [1963] and other researchers ran hundreds of user tests that examined the effects of different fonts and text layout variables, such as the amount of vertical space between each line of text (called leading). Their research focused on user performance, and reading speed was the favoured measure. They charted the effect of the manipulated variables on reading speed, looking for the point at which their participants could read the fastest. Their assumption was that faster reading speeds created a more optimal experience. Printers and ✅Publishers eagerly consumed this research. In recent years, some of these variables have been reexamined as the technology and capabilities evolve with the advent of computers and computer screens. Dillon [1992] examined how to design textual information for an electronic environment. Boyarski et al. [1998] examined the effect of fonts that were designed for computer screens. Dyson & Kipping [1998] examined the effect of line length on computer screens. Larson et al. [2000] examined the effect of 3-D rotation on reading. Gugerty et al. [2004] demonstrated a reading performance advantage with the Microsoft ClearType display technology.

The Two-Body Force in Nuclei Proceedings of the Symposium on the Two-Body Force in Nuclei held at Gull Lake, Michigan, Septemb

Free Download The Two-Body Force in Nuclei: Proceedings of the Symposium on the Two-Body Force in Nuclei held at Gull Lake, Michigan, September 7-10, 1971 By Malcolm H. Macfarlane (auth.), S. M. Austin, G. M. Crawley (eds.)
1995 | 390 Pages | ISBN: 1468483390 | PDF | 7 MB
The idea of this symposium grew out of our discussions on the need to review the advances that had been made in the theoretical description of inelastic scattering reactions in the last few years. Since a microscopic description of inelastic scattering uses realistic effective interactions, we felt that it was appropriate to begin such a summary with a discussion of the free two-nucleon force. However as we thought further about this review, it became increasingly apparent that a rather more ambitious program linking the free two-nucleon force and nuclear matter calculations both to shell model calculations and to reaction theory, would be appropriate and perhaps even necessary to do full justice to the subject. We hope that the symposium as it emerged did fulfill these aims, better perhaps than we expected. There are some comments required concerning the presentation of the material. First the papers are grouped by session number for convenient gathering of the same topic in the same place. Secondly, because of the rather tight constraint on pages, it was possible to print only those contributions which were presented orally at the symposium. The remainner are included as abstracts. The full text of all the contributed papers is available as a Michigan State University Cyclotron Laboratory Report (MSUCL 39/1971).

In summary, we can conclude that the contributions of the different ionization processes to the total ionization rate for the most abundant interstellar species are basically known. The ionization of the noble gases He and Ne is almost completely dominated by photoionization, whereas for H charge-exchange with the solar wind is most important. For other species, such as 0 and Ar, both processes contribute significantly. Electron impact ionization can typically contribute by ‘" 10% to the total rate in the inner Solar System. Because direct measurements of the solar EUV flux are not yet continuously available, the variation of the ionization rate over the solar cycle still contains a relatively large uncertainty. The recent measurements of pickup ion distributions and of the neutral helium gas provide an independent tool to determine the total ionization rate that can be used to cross calibrate with the results obtained for the individual ionization processes. Gruntman for drawing our attention to and support in collecting the most recent data on charge-exchange cross-sections. D.
