Quantum effects in macroscopic systems have long been a fascination for researchers. Over the past decade mechanical oscillators have emerged as a leading system of choice for many such experiments. The work reported in this thesis investigates the effects of the radiation-pressure force of light on macroscopic mechanical structures. The basic system studied is a mechanical oscillator that is highly reflective and part of an optical resonator. It interacts with the optical cavity mode via the radiation-pressure force. Both the dynamics of the mechanical oscillation and the properties of the light field are modified through this interaction. The experiments use quantum optical tools (such as homodyning and down-conversion) with the goal of ultimately showing quantum behavior of the mechanical center of mass motion.

In the new edition, supplements, additional explanations and cross-references have been added at numerous places, including new formulations of some of the problems. In all these additions I have attempted not to change the compact character of the book. The present third English edition is identical to the current German sixth edition. The proofs were read by D. Badel, E. Bauer, E. Jorg-Miiller, S. Weinfurtner, A. Jurisch and T. Wollenweber. Special thanks go to them and to Prof. U. C. Tauber and Dr. R. Hilton for comments on some of the formulations. I would like to thank all colleagues and students who have made suggestions to improve the book, as well as the publisher. Munich, January 2002 F. Schwabl Preface to the First Edition This is a textbook on quantum mechanics. In an introductory chapter, the basic postulates are established, beginning with the historical development, by the analysis of an interference experiment. From then on the organization is purely deductive. In addition to the basic ideas and numerous applica tions, new aspects of quantum mechanics and their experimental tests are presented. In the text, emphasis is placed on a concise, yet self-contained, presentation. The comprehensibility is guaranteed by giving all mathemati cal steps and by carrying out the intermediate calculations completely and thoroughly.

English | PDF | 1991 | 316 Pages | ISBN : N/A | 21.7 MB
Based on the interactive program Interquanta, Quantum Mechanics on the Macintosh, uses extensive 3-D graph- ics to guide the student through computer experiments in the quantum mechanics of free particle motion, bound states and scattering, tunneling, two-particle interactions, and more. It also includes a section on special functions of mathematical physics. With more than 200 problems, the text and programs provide students with practical experiences in using such hard-to-visualize concepts as complex amplitudes, eigenvalues, and scattering cross sections. The diskettes included with the book provide two versions of the programs, one for use in computers with a mathematical coprocessor, the other optimized for machines without a coprocessor.

From January 8-13,1990, distinguished physicists from many nations came to Chile to share with each other and with Latin American students exciting recent developments. The occasion was the third of a series of meetings on Quantum Mechanics of Fundamental Systems which are held every two years at the Centro de Estudios Cientificos de Santiago. This volume grew out from that gathering. The meeting was possible thanks to the generous support of the Tinker Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, the Ministere des AfIaires Etrangeres et Service Culturel et de Cooperation Scientifique et Technique de France, the Third World Academy of Sciences, and FONDECYT-Chile. The happy winds blowing over Chile at the time enhanced the joy provided by the beauty of the physics discussed. Quantum Mechanics for Pedestrians 1 Fundamentals

English | PDF | 2018 | 525 Pages | ISBN : 3030004635 | 6 MB
This book, the first in a two-volume set, provides an introduction to the fundamentals of (mainly) non-relativistic quantum mechanics. This first volume chiefly focuses on the essential principles, while applications and extensions of the formalism can be found in volume 2. Including but also moving beyond material that is covered in traditional textbooks on quantum mechanics, the book discusses in detail current issues such as interaction-free quantum measurements or neutrino oscillations, as well as fundamental problems and epistemological questions, such as the measurement problem. A chapter on the postulates of quantum mechanics rounds off this first volume.

English | PDF | 1995 | 342 Pages | ISBN : 3642795404 | 18.4 MB
Quantum Mechanics Using Maple permits the study of quantum mechanics in a novel, interactive way using the computer algebra and graphics system Maple V. Usually the physics student is distracted from understanding the concepts of modern physics by the need to master unfamiliar mathematics at the same time. In 39 guided Maple sessions the reader explores many standard quantum mechanics problems, as well as some advanced topics that introduce approximation techniques. A solid knowledge of Maple V is acquired as it applies to advanced mathematics relevant for engineering, physics, and applied mathematics. The diskette contains 39 Maple V for Windows worksheet files to reproduce all the problems presented in the text. The suggested exercises can be performed with a minimum of typing.

Quantum Mechanics Special Chapters

English | PDF | 1998 | 386 Pages | ISBN : 3540600736 | 29.6 MB
Quantum Mechanics – Special Chapters is an important additional course for third-year students. Starting with the quantization of a free electromagnetic field and its interaction with matter, it discusses second quantization and interacting quantum fields. After re-normalization problems and a general treatment of nonrelativistic quantum field theory, these methods are applied to problems from solid-state physics and plasma physics: quantum gas, superfluidity, plasmons, and photons. The book concludes with an introduction to quantum statistics, the structure of atoms and molecules, and the Schrödinger wave equation formulated by Feynman path integrals. 72 fully and carefully worked examples and problems consolidate the material.
