Author: Frank McDonough | Narrator: Paul McGann
Professor Frank McDonough is one of the leading scholars and most popular writers on the history of Nazi Germany. His work has been described as ‘modern history writing at its very best…Ground-breaking, fascinating, occasionally deeply revisionist’ by renowned historian Andrew Roberts.
Drawing on a detailed examination of previously unpublished Gestapo case files, this audiobook relates the fascinating, vivid and disturbing accounts of a cross-section of ordinary and extraordinary people who opposed the Nazi regime. It also tells the equally disturbing stories of their friends, neighbours, colleagues and even relatives who were often drawn into the Gestapo’s web of intrigue. The audiobook reveals, too, the cold-blooded and efficient methods of the Gestapo officers.

Narrator: Patty Nieman

A wide-ranging intellectual history that reveals how important games have been to human progress, and what’s at stake when we forget what games we’re really playing. We play games to learn about the world, to understand our minds and the minds of others, and to make predictions about the future. Games are an essential aspect of humanity and a powerful tool for modeling reality. They’re also a lot of fun. But games can be dangerous, especially when we mistake the model worlds of games for reality itself and let gamification co-opt human decision making. Playing with Reality explores the riveting history of games since the Enlightenment, weaving an unexpected path through military theory, political science, evolutionary biology, the development of computers and AI, cutting-edge neuroscience, and cognitive psychology.

Cue the Sun! The Invention of Reality TV [Audiobook]

Free Download Cue the Sun!: The Invention of Reality TV (Audiobook)
English | ASIN: B0CPTB7H6Q | 2024 | 15 hours and 11 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 444 MB
Author: Emily Nussbaum
Narrator: Gabra Zackman

Who invented reality television, the world’s most dangerous pop-culture genre? And why can’t we look away? In this revelatory, deeply reported account of the rise of "dirty documentary"-from its contentious roots in radio to the ascent of Donald Trump-Emily Nussbaum unearths the origin story of the genre that ate the world, as told through the lively voices of the people who built it. At once gimlet-eyed and empathetic, Cue the Sun! explores the morally charged, funny, and sometimes tragic consequences of the hunt for something real inside something fake. In sharp, absorbing prose, Nussbaum traces the jagged fuses of experimentation that exploded with Survivor at the turn of the millennium. She introduces the genre’s trickster pioneers, from the icy Allen Funt to the shambolic Chuck Barris; Cops auteur John Langley; cynical Bachelor ringmaster Mike Fleiss; and Jon Murray and Mary-Ellis Bunim, the visionaries behind The Real World-along with dozens of stars from An American Family, The Real World, Big Brother, Survivor, and The Bachelor. We learn about the tools of the trade-like the Frankenbite, a deceptive editor’s best friend-and ugly tales of exploitation. But Cue the Sun! also celebrates reality’s peculiar power: a jolt of emotion that could never have come from a script. What happened to the first reality stars, the Louds-and why won’t they speak to the couple who filmed them? Which serial killer won on The Dating Game? Nussbaum explores reality TV as a strike-breaker, the queer roots of Bravo, the dark truth behind The Apprentice, and more. A shrewd observer who adores television, Nussbaum is the ideal voice for the first substantive history of the genre that, for better or worse, made America what it is today.

Free Download Internationalism in the Olympic Movement: Idea and Reality between Nations, Cultures, and People By Holger Preuss (auth.), Holger Preuss, Karsten Liese (eds.)
2011 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 3531180002 | PDF | 2 MB
The idea of "Internationalism" has manifested itself not only in the intercultural dialogue within the Olympic Movement, but also at the Olympic Games as the sportive, cultural, and media peak of the four-year-circle. The authors analyze and discuss Internationalism from different professional perspectives, against different cultural backgrounds, as well as in relation to diverse reference groups to widen the understanding of Internationalism as a social interaction in the Olympic Movement. They also aim at establishing the intersections and equal normative principles of "Internationalism" within the different cultural and institutional fields. These common grounds may be useful for the practical implementation and realization of "Internationalism" through Olympic sports and at Olympic Youth Camps. This book is valuable reading for academics, practitioners, and policy makers in the field of sport sociology and Olympic studies.

Alien Structure Language and Reality

Free Download Matti Eklund, "Alien Structure: Language and Reality"
English | ISBN: 0198871546 | 2024 | 272 pages | PDF | 2 MB
What sorts of alien languages can there be? And might reality be such that some alien language represents reality better than familiar languages do? Alien languages are here languages that use different kinds of semantic tools than any familiar languages use. The question of the existence of alien languages is interesting in itself: what kinds of languages are possible? But attending to the issue of alien languages also problematizes the relationship between language and reality, and highlights the possibility that reality could have a fundamentally different structure than we otherwise take it to have. Despite the foundational significance of these questions, they have received virtually no explicit attention in the literature. But the book brings up and criticizes existing contemporary work that promises to be at least indirectly relevant. A main claim of the book is that alien languages are possible and that we should be alert to the possibility that reality has alien structure and is best described by an alien language. The book also raises other possibilities regarding this debate. Maybe we should not say that the world has either kind of structure but can be equally well described using either kind of language.
